Got out a couple days this past week

We managed to get out a couple of days this past week. The weather was pretty nice and we got to see some beautiful mountain country here in northeastern BC. The winds haven't stripped too many of the trees yet, and the stands of poplar and aspen are bright in their yellows, golds and oranges of...

    7 PRC Loads

An update on the performance of the Nosler 142 gr LRAB ammunition in my 6.5 PRC: 2921 fps (spec is 2900 fps) from my 24" Wilson 1:8 carbon fibre barreled LH Browning X Bolt Hunter and produced 0.480" groups (average) at 100 yards with an ES of 26.9 and an SD of 12 on a day that was 24 degrees...

A new kid on the block...

Yes, I see that now; .526 vs .529...in a 140 gr .264" bullet, and they have a different tip (Slipstream vs polymer tip). At first glance, I was thinking that Speer had tipped the Deep Curl bullet to make the Impact bullet, and changed the tip colour to distinguish it from the Tipped Fusion...

    Misfire

As with anything manmade, there are going to be times when things aren't what they should be, and they fail. It could be a primer issue... There was a span of time (late 90's or early 2000's, I don't recall exact dates at the moment) when Winchester primers were having issues, both as...

    First Time Out This Season

Best of luck! Pretty happy with the new Deathgrip carbon tripos with infinite head. I also picked up their little Deathgrip unit for sitting or kneeling at 50% off at Cabelas on my trip south in early September. Should be light and handy for mountain hunting.

A new kid on the block...

I believe the tipped Impact component bullet is the tipped Fusion loaded in the Federal ammo. Haven't seen any to try in any of my rifles yet...

20 cartridges to rule them all

After I replaced the stock Remington recoil pad on my LH BDL 338 Win Mag with a LimbSaver, felt recoil was way more tolerable. I went from being bruised and sore after 20 rounds off the bench (Federal Premium 210 gr Partition ammo) to no bruising and not sore after a session of 60 rounds off the...

Would You Hunt Red Stag w/ this Load?

Honestly, I wouldn't hesitate to use your 130 gr BT load for red stag at the distances you stated. While I have only taken one red stag to date, I did it with the 6.5 Creedmoor and the 130 gr Terminal Ascent bullet at 2855 fps at the muzzle, and it produced a one-shot kill on the red stag at...

Are the .358 200gr Accubonds really gone?

I have used the 220 gr Hot Cor on a few elkelk, and they work great!

Blood drained by mosquitoes. Fell in a marshy swamp. Tired and exhausted. Hundreds of miles walked. Sun burned. Some shots, not a single kill.

Turkeys have great senses from what I have read and seen on many shows, and their hearing and eyesight are keen. No sudden moves is a good start, but they will catch movement, even when slow if not otherwise distracted. As affirmed by others here.

Keep in mind that hunting shows and posts only show a few moments to approximately 13 minutes of film during a half hour program. It does not show the hundreds or thousands of edited minutes of film it requires to get those few moments and minutes that are aired.

Hunting is a game of patience and persistence. And it is a learned skill. This means it takes time! And without the time and effort put in, you will not learn to appreciate the wins as much when they are actually accomplished. As mentioned above, a change in perspective can make it more...

    Which would you choose?

The Partition is an excellent bullet with proven performance on game, and was one I also considered before answering. And I have not had many issues with obtaining good to excellent accuracy with it. In the end, I chose the AccuBond, for its edge in accuracy, ease of use in finding good loads...

Have you tried the Federal 35 Rem 220 gr Hammer Down ammo?

I attended a local gun show today, and on one of the tables, there was some of this ammo for sale. I thought about grabbing a box to try it in the Marlin 336 that I got for Susan. I tried to look it up tonight, and it looks like Federal doesn't even offer it anymore, and could not find a lot...

    Which would you choose?

I came across a Youtube podcast this evening by The Big Game Hunting Podcast, titled 388: 25 Creedmoor - A triple Threat Cartridge with Richard Mann. Near the end of the podcast, the interviewer asks a very interesting question: If you could choose just one cartridge or bullet to hunt with...

    Universal reloading manual

I guess that I am old school enough that I still prefer to read manuals...but as mentioned above, I also like the write ups about the various cartridges in the manuals, and the fact that every new manual, the write up is by a new author. Gives more perspective and experience about various...
