You are actually quite close to what the Alliant site & my chronograph say I get using RL19. My .280 performs best w/ slower powders like H4831sc & IMR7828. Don't expect much more than 3000fps from you 24"bbl, 3150fps is a bit optimistic IMO. :roll:
I order my Lapua stuff on line. Try;

You'll get lots of diff. opinions on bbl. break in as well as cleaning. I have started doing bbl. break in the last 8-10 years. There are diff. methods but:
clean the new bbl. thoroughly
fire one shot & patch clean, do this for 10 shots. I am often getting a scope sighted in so the shots aren't...
Personally, I think your original thoughts on 150grRCL for elk are correct. Yes the elk went down but there doesn't look like much bullet left & I for one like more penetration/energy. At least you got your elk, but have your buddy move up to at least 165gr NPs for future hunts. :grin: I wonder...
I'm not sure what youpay for factory ammo, but one can easily cut the best prices in half for .45acp. Just about any fast to medium burning powder works well. I An old favorite is Unique especially under lead bullets, very accurate.
An exit truely would have been impressive as the bull took the round in the front of his chest 1/4 away slightly. The bullet was just under the hide on the last offside rib. Perfect performance, very dead Kudu. :grin:
I also use wet phone books. I have found bullets recovered from game to look amazingly like the ones taken from wetpack. Dry paper really tears a bullet up. I use cardboard packing boxes that copy paper comes in. Line it w/ plastic trash bags & stack the wet phone books in tight. The boxes are...
JD338, what bbl. length is your .280AI? I am running 160grNPs @ 2850fps & 140grNPs @ 3000fps from my 23"bbl. .280. I know my .260ai is really only giving me about 50-75fps over the std. 260. I think the .280ai has the right exp. ratio to make the AI viable.
You won't see much improvement over your std. .270 or .25-06. They are already running hot & the shoulder improvement mught let you have 1.5-2gr more cap. You can get that by switching to a diff. brand of brass. I have a .260ai I had made. Since it was a new bbl. the extra cost not an issue. I...
I've had no problems reloading in my garage for years in outside temps 20-120. Store your primers & powder indoors for max. longevity. You can build a very usefull reloading setup in a 3ft sq. coat closet, you don't need much room.
I have never gotten behind the ;ittle .243 as a good deer antelope round, especially for new shooter. I love the .25-06, but long action, loud muzzle blast. I would go .260 or 7-08. Plenty for deer & antelope to any reasonable range & from most angles w/ good bullets.
I'm not surpirsed at your results, I pretty much only use NPs in the diff. rifle/calibers I hunt with. The penetration you got at 400yds isn't a surprise either, the bullet slows down & expands less, penetrates more. What makes the NP work for me is the broad range of impact vel. from 50yds to...
Lapua, RWS, Norma in that order. DOmestic brass, I like WW over RP & haven't tried Nosler or Hornady yet, but plan to. Like 340, just wishe Lapua was made in more calibers.
You'll often see better accuracy under 300yds w/ flat base bullets. 150gr NP would be my choice as an all round deer/antelope bullet. Second place would go to the Speer GS, then Hornady IL.
Either will do the job. Both are flat shooting enough. I use a 210grNP in my 338-06 & have only ever recovered one of these from any animal including elk, zebra & Kudu. The .338wm probably kicks a bit less & I love that bore so make mine a .338wm. :grin:
Savage99, many countries ser.# the bbls. so switch bbl. is out.
For NA, I would be happy w/ a 30-06, even though I currently don't own one. For hunting the entire worl, the only choice is a .375H&H or .375Wby. :shock:
