Rick is correct, what works in my rifle may not in yours. I start w/ the bullet seated to clear the mag. box. As long as it isn't jambed into the lands, I'll use that as my max. COL.
Your 270wsm is going to give you some very high impact vel. This is where a premium (NAB, NP) or super premium bullet (BarnesTSX) shines. Unless you are sure your impact vel. is under 2800fps or so, I would pass on the NBT & go NAB or NP in 130-140gr. The NBT fragments at impact speed much above...
Nosler now makes good .280 brass. I have no problem w/ RP but I prefer Norma. It's a bit pricey but seems to last longer than the RP. I have not needed mag primers & in my rifle, Fed210Match give slightly better accuracy.
As far as powder, every rifle is diff. but mine likes slower powders for...
If you can be sure your impact vel. will be under 2700fps, then go with the bullet that shoots best in your .260. I prefer the 125grNP for all around deer bullet as I know it will stay together from 50yds to 400yds.
I'm alos a fan of 16gr bullets in the 7mag. Try diff. powder comb. in your to tighten groups. I like IMR7828 but RL22, H1000 are all proven performers.
I feel the BTs are best used for longer range shots where you know your impact vel. will be below 2700fps. Much above tha & they start to come apart, shallow penetration & massive meat damage. In your 7mag, would want a AB or partition if shots have any chance of being under 200yds.
I run the 160grAB @ 2850fps from my .280 & have only been able to test them so far. I find they expand a bit more than the Part. but pentrate a bit less in wetpack. I need to try the 140grAB as my deer/antelope round. I like the 160gr for a deer/elk round.
Unless you are making ammo to store for long periods of time, there is little value in sealing the primer & /or bullet. There is enough seal between the tight fitting components to fend off even dunking in water.
Tom if you are a new reloader you should read through the entire manual. You can leave out the rifle load section, but there is some good info. throughout the book. You should also opick up another manual, I like Speer's, just to cross reference data.
I have tried both in my son's 06. I find RL22 more accurate & higher vel. vs perssure w/ 180gr bullets. Start w/ 59gr & work up to 61.5gr max. in my son's Ruger. Almost 2800fps & it shoots 1moa.
IMO, 4350 is too fast for the big 7s, you hit pressures before you get higher vel.. Move up to IMR4831 or even better H4831sc or RL22. You should easily get to 3150fps & accuracy will probably improve as density goes up. I aslo like IMR7828 w/ 150gr bullets & up.
I load for a 7mm Dakota & have settled on the 160grNP for everything. It shoots submoa & kills deer to elk w/ equal effect. The diff. in trajectory out to 400yds btwn. the 140 & 160 is really negligent.
I would give H4831sc a try under the 140grNAB. RL22 should also do well. You should easily get 3200fps in the 7rem. As to effectiveness on elk, if you are happy w/ 160gr why change? For me, the reason to hunt w/ a 7mag over a 7-08 or .280 is you can push those beautifully long bullets faster...

Most have data for jacketed, just drop the charge 0,3-0.5gr for app. the same vel.
Congrats on the elk. The 7mag w/ 160grNP is an elk rifle for sure. There is a diff. though between a cow & big 6pt bull, about 250#+ worth of muscle & bone. That's when you want to get closer so you don't lose that one.
I think you get the most out of smaller bore magnums using 26"bbls. You are right though, it cracks me up that many hunters have 7STW, .300RUMs, etc. then shoot deer from a tree stand @ 100yds! A .30-30 would be just as deadly w/ less cost, weight & muzzle blast. These rounds serve a special...
Exactly roy. Since you are not limited to a magazine length, you can squeeze a bit more powder in by loading your bullets out a bit longer. So pick your bullet of choice & load it in a dummy round to the OAL you want. Ask for a throat no mor than 0.10" pat your bullets ogive. Since you are using...
