Im getting ready to buy my first 35 whelen. 24 inch Douglas barrel, McMillan Sako hunter stock, trigger set to 3 lbs, Talley rings. Comes with 225 accubonds, 225 ttsx bullets and rl15 powder. Am I set or need something else powder wise?
That is one impressive looking group, awesome shooting and reloading. I was feeling pretty good with my .75 200 yard group with my 300 rum until i saw that group.
Welcome. You can use the same data for the 250 partition as the accubond. As always start low and work up to max powder charge for your rifle. H4831sc always worked well for me in a 338wm. I think N560 might be on the slow side for the 338wm.
Great looking rifle. If it were me I would stay with the 250 accubond as it will do well out to 1k. Retumbo is a great powder in the rums, should be very close to 3000 fps. I use it with 200 accubond in my 300 rum.
That is one great looking rifle, makes me really miss mine as it was the same classis rilfe style. I used RL22 with 220 hornady and 200 tsx with great accuracy.
One thing I have learned over all the years of elk hunting is that elk have no place to be and no time to be there by. I've killed elk in the early morning, mid day and late afternoon. If you find unpressured elk they can and will show up at any time of the day.
I agree 100% with Scotty with rl22 and a 300 win mag. I will add though that with rl22 lot to lot variation can swing quite a bit so when changing lot numbers always back down in charge weight and work back up as with any powder.
Like others have said use the starting nosler load for the 175 tsx and work up. I have found that a tsx bullet will go 1 to 1.5 grains above a partition bullet for max pressure.
