I went through your same thought process a couple of years ago. I was after a 338 Fed instead. I wound up getting a great deal on a 308 Win and just sent it to JES for the rebore. Worked out fantastically ! I even come in under $$$ as opposed to buying any of the new 338 Fed offerings.
You...
They are guidelines, period. Never forget that.
I have a 7RM that only shines with a boat load of H4831 & a 160. It's a few grains above Max, in the books, but no high pressure signs.
My 308 is a finicky little B!tch that won't print squat unless it's a full charge of RL15, but spits a 180...
I have always dreamed of a Ruger #1 in my hunting go-to's. Never had the $$$$ until now, in my retired years. But the cartridge I'd love to have is only offered in a barrel shorter than I think is appropriate.
A 280 should be on everyone's short list. Probably the #1 for an only one.
Great...
Songdog, soooo... you're saying that the 300rds of 140gr Barnes that I bought at $15 a box wasn't a bad investment ??
What should I do with all my 140 AB's ??
I think you nailed it with your statement "I grabbed it on the way out the door.....I was impressed with it's performance".
I have both. There has been many a dinner on the table due to each. The truth is though, once I got the 7/08, the 308 started seeing less action really, really quick. Some cartridges just do way more in the field than the paper numbers would indicate. The 7/08 is one of them.
What can I tell ya. Been there. It takes a long drawn out process to get to where you finally see enough is too much. I'm comfortable now with a 5X6X8 hall closet that pretty much holds all I've decided I truly need, no matter where I go, or what I persue. It's stuffed to the gills, but it's in...
Glad to hear it's going so well for you. Can't say that here in N. Ohio. I haven't seen squat so far concerning any real rut behavior. Maybe it's been all the rain lately, who knows? Last year it took the 1st snow squall to break it loose and then right in the middle of it I saw more bucks (and...
Not the proudest moment of my hunting career, but I neatly took the head of a fluffy bunny with a 180gr out of my 44 Mag at a whopping 7 yds.
Hey! Say what you will, I was the only guy in camp to come back with meat for dinner and nobody turned down their portion !
Ok, I'll pull a Sheldon Cooper moment here. I think your looking at a waste of copper, powder & primers by trying to run with the Barnes bullet weights that you requested, given the twist of the barrel.
Why?
Mono's run long for weight and the length of the round in relation to the diameter of...
Waaaayyyy back in my day I used Hornady interlocks exclusively, because Nosler only had 2 offerings. It was a Partion, or a Solid, period. (seriously showing my age here) At that point in my life I could not convince my new wife I 'Had" to have the Noslers at the price point. Just wasn't worth...
I ran into the same situation with my 7/08 and RL-19. Nosler data and a couple of my forum friends indicated that it was a Gotta Try powder, yeilding superior velocity and accuracy. Well the results were....abysmal. Over 250fps slower than predicted and accuracy only in line with a couple of...
Why not go with Nosler's ? Their data clearly states the 60gr PT is out of a 8" twist barrel. There must be a reason they chose that bullet for that twist rate, and then take the money/time/effort to publish it.
From what I understand your looking at the same situation as the 120 vs 140 in the .284 BT. Same jacket just weighs less. In that case you will have Zero problems, especially at Grendel velocities.
The question is, how much freezer space do you have?
I can't even begin to calculate the # of powders I tried and wound up just giving away to the next chump trying to find 'The One".
I got good accuracy from 4064 in my 308 carbine, but velocity was always Ho-Hum. RL-15 was consistently inconsistent until I found the Node, then it shined bright...
I'm really, Really Not a 30/06 fan, but I have to say I'd take that 165 PT load and run out the back door before anybody else could get their hands on it, everyday !
My 7/08 would be pissed as hell at me though.
Remember the individual shot out of a 12ga hits no harder than it does out of a 20ga. You simply have more shot exiting the end of the barrel.
Go for it.
A Rem 600 in 35Rem. Wish I had picked up the one I found for sale back in the 70's, but I didn't have $99.00 to spare. For that matter, I didn't have $2 to spare....
Get a youth model M500, or a M870, in 20 ga.
There is absolutely ZERO difference in how hard a 20ga and a 12ga hit the game. It's simply about the number of shot that flies out the end of the barrel and that can be overcome by A) practice &/or B) 3" shells.
Just my $0.02
