The 25-06 Is it really enough for mule deer?

Why not? Because an Elk can be 6 times the mass of a deer. Hunting an Elk with a 25.06 is like hunting a Deer with a .223. Guy, I"ve got the impression that you hunt some wild country, not exactly "game preserves", so given the choice, I would take something bigger.

    Nosler Brass :(

As, Dr, Mike mentioned, QL suggests you are over pressure. Keep in mind, Nosler brass, on average, is thicker then most, so this will increase pressures further. Considering this, I'm not suprise you are experiencing loose primer pockets.

    the .280 Remington

Polaris, like wise, I'd never consider the 270 or 280 for a primary Elk Round. When Elk are on the menu I"m picking up my .338 Win Mag.

7mm rem mag flyers to right

QL lists the max with that bullet and powder closer to 65.5gr. Looks like you have some room to play with. Like OT suggested, I've had most of my best luck with H4831 closer to max loads. This could give you another option to explore.

    Accubonds lack of penetration??

This matches with my experience. With the STW at 25 yards the 160gr AB didn't penetrate through on a quartering shot of a BIG mule deer. At 1000 yards on an antelope it went straigh through with no problems.

7mm rem mag flyers to right

RR could be on to something. Bedding/freefloat issue. Also as JD mentioned, sometimes the "multi groups" can be resolved by adjusting seating depth. I'd check bedding and barrel channel, an if everything was kosher go to work on the COL.

    the .280 Remington

The academic difference is the .277 can effectively use a a 10% lighter bullet, and the .284 can effectivly use a .06% heavier bullet. As for load, what I quotes was from a load I used 25 years ago, before I had a dedicated varmit rifle(s). Truth of the matter is both you and I have varmit...

    Shortening barrel length?

He never said how accurate it is, nor what kind of accuracy he's looking for. Yotesmoker gets good accuracy with his and the 160gr AB's.

The 25-06 Is it really enough for mule deer?

JD, the .280 AI with a 26" barrel is an efficent combination. It solves the data problem of the origina .280, and allows you to get the most out of all your components. It makes for a well balances, all-round medium rifle.

The 25-06 Is it really enough for mule deer?

But JD, you don't use a .280, you use the Magical .280 AI. That makes it almost as good as a .270.

    3 vs 6 vs 8 groove barrels?

RR brings up an interesting point. Does fewer points of rifling equate to more stess on the bullet at each bullet/rifling junction? Do you want the stress of that 250K RPM spread across 3 points in the jacket, or 6 points?

    the .280 Remington

Polaris, I don't know anyone that hunts in open country with the 160gr semi spitzer. But if the 280 is so versitle, what do you use for a prarrie dog bullet in the .280? I get 3500 FPS with the 90gr Sierra's out of a 22" barrel, and it will flip the little buggers 10 feet into the air. You MAY...

The 25-06 Is it really enough for mule deer?

Shoot 5, a .30 cal magnum makes a great all around rifle. Load it with something like a 180gr BT and you can confidently hunt deer, antelope, and elk. IME elk are tough, especially those public land elk that are usually shot under less then ideal circumstances. So, a .32 Cal bullet around 3k...
