I shot a good few 190g Hornady BTSP Interlocks in my 30-06. I was running H4350. Got right around 2700 and a bit FPS. I suspect the ABLR version would be a VERY nice big game cartridge.
I’d be starting with a load of around 54g of H4350 and work up. I think I was using about 56g in my...
A couple of posts on another thread got me thinking a bit more about this issue. I quite often begin load development with the OAL such that the bullet is actually kissing the rifling, providing mag length allows it.
I then reduce OAL in increments if I find accuracy is not where I want it...
Yep TD that’s what I was getting at with the comment about causing the higher speeds.
I generally start load development with the ogive kissing the lands and if accuracy isn’t there I back off incrementally.
Thanks Mark I’ll let you know how I go.
43g of AR2209 (H4350) yielded 2945fps. Quite a bit less powder than the QL but that’s not unusual. Also the COaL was 2.710” which is the bullet kissing the lands. The kissing the lands may well account for the higher speeds at lower charge weight, to some extent anyway.
My groups have a bit of...
Ok so I have taken delivery of the rifle. Weatherby Vanguard Stainless with a Hardy (NZ) 1-7” barrel also in Stainless.
Have kicked off a forming load with 90g Prvi soft points. Also have a few 105g BTHP Hornady Match loads ready to go today in brass I formed a couple days ago.
Will be...
Another alternative I used with that bullet in my 270 Win was R17. Mine needed quite heavy loads to reach book speeds so I won't write down the load I was using, but kick off around 50 to 51g or thereabouts.
CCI standard LR primers and I was using WW brass which is pretty roomy.
In all...
My fave is the 180 grain, .30 cal Ballistic Tip. Shoot them in 30-06. They are very accurate, they expand well and they hold together about as well as any bonded bullet I've used.
Hard to imagine too many things that walk the Earth, that that combo would not kill.
Got a couple hundred 6mm...
Interesting that AR2209 and H4350 show different pressures and speeds, given they are identical. Just goes to show nothing is absolute with handloading.
R26 is impressive. Not sure it's available here. Plenty of options though.
G'day fellows,
Just wondered if someone would be kind enough to run a QL analysis for me on a proposed 243 Ackley Improved load. I have a build in the works and making some decisions around throating, barrel length and others...
Anyway for anyone who feels inclined to help me out here are the...
I recently went through this process. At the end of it all I ended with with only one Compact RAR 223 Rem, a Sako A7 308 Win Stainless, an Omark 308 set up for long range, a 45-70 Marlin for pigs in the thick stuff, and a 24" bbl Zastava 30-06 for general purpose big game. That's it!
Aside from...
223Rem by a mile and down here at least, the 308Win isn't all that far behind. I can get once fired 308 brass almost free and there's always specials going on .308 calibre projectiles.
Gotta love NATO!
Hello Folks,
Two friends and I went out on the hogs this week, overall we took 29 between us over a couple of days and a great time had. Thought I'd report on the performance of the 30 cal 168 Amax on the pigs.
I was using my Sako A7 in 308 Win loaded with the Amax to a mild-ish 2700 fps. I...
I've used a lot of Norma Oryxes in 180g / 30-06 on pigs. Fairly unsurprisingly, they worked very very well. Accurate and mostly double-punched shoulders on pigs of all sizes.
Couple of no nonsense loads right there.
FWIW, I was running 130grain NPTs with SIXTY ONE grains of H4831SC before I broke 3050fps in a 23.5 inch bbl. That was with powder batches a few years ago.
Was also using 58g of the same powder with the 160g NPT for 2840fps.
All I am saying is, myself...
What Guy said.
I use the 168Amax a lot on game and have been very happy with it. It does expand widely and quickly however. This is my preference. But I know many others prefer bullets to expand less widely and penetrate further and the heavier BTs like the 165 grainers upwards do that.
The...
