In my case, the scope I'm looking for will go on a rifle being set up for 338 Federal, and will be my brush gun that gets carried for white tail, elk and bear. I don't see many opportunities for big game shots over 300 yards, and 6x seems to be what my current scope gravitates to when hunting...
I'm scope shopping again, and while doing a little research about what is out there to fit my needs, ran across this thread. It's probably too little and too late, but if you are looking at the NX8 price range scopes, I'd consider a Kahles 1-6 or 1-8. Both are second focal plane scopes, and...
My plan for quite some time was to find a 99 in 358 (or change a 308 into the 358) and the closer this plan came to happening, and the more I learned about the 338 Federal, my plan evolved a bit. I don't need either, but I think the 338 is maybe a little more versatile and will give me a few...
A good condition 300 Savage would be a lot easier to find than the .308 was. The 300 Savage showed up everywhere when I started looking, but .308's in nice shape were few and far between.
I just picked up a 1957 version of a Savage 99 in .308. Planning on sending it off in the next couple weeks to get rebored and rechambered to a .338 Federal. This should complete my 99 "itch", leaving me with 3. One as a 6mm Creedmoor, one in i's original state as .308, and one in 338 Federal.
Looking for some feedback from those here who buy/sell firearms regularly. I've got a buddy that was recently diagnosed terminal, and he's going to start parting with stuff in an effort to help his financial state for the time he has left. One of the things going on the block is his gun...
Chiming in with an update on this thing. Once I was able to get out and shoot this thing, I was plagued with vertical stringing in my shots, noticeable right after the cold bore shot and continuing for every shot thereafter. Some days the vertical stringing would be minimal (like bug holes in a...
Progress is kinda slow. Took the rifle out to shoot and figured out the holes drilled and tapped for the scope are NOT factory... A little bit off (OK, a LOT bit off...) Not enough windage and elevation adjustment with my desired scope to zero in, so needed to change rings. Burris XTR...
What's make/model rifle are you turning into a 7mm STW??? Very cool caliber!
As far as the cheek rest, I made it. About $20 worth of Kydex, expanding spray foam, and some epoxy, and about 4 hrs spread over a couple evenings. Pretty easy gig -- I'm liking it so much I'll make a second for my...
Ah, nice to get some good feedback on the Benchmark barrels. Thx!
I'll post some results after I get a chance to shoot it. May be a while though -- picked up 5 inches of snow last night and it's not very pleasant out there.
I went with Hell's Canyon Armory for the carbon fiber barrel. They use Benchmark Barrels for their blanks, and had a standard barrel/shank configuration that matched the action size of the 99 almost perfectly. (And they are local to where I live, so I was able to deal with them in person...
I had a 6.5 CM and loved it for what you are planning on doing with this rifle. (I preferred it over the 25-06 I had.) One of the things I noticed with the 6.5 CM is it doesn't seem very particular about the ammo I put thru it. That rifle seemed to shoot 0.3 to 0.5 MOA with whatever I fed it...
It's funny that you mention the AR platforms. I like to tinker with my stuff to customize it to me for fit and function, so you'd think an AR platform with all the options available out there would be tailormade for me. But interestingly enough, they hold zero appeal for me. I've never...
Very good point about the forearm. I'll end up trimming the current hunk of wood down quite a bit, and will cut the barrel channel very deep on the wood yet to add, so will shave a bit more weight off. I'm actually not too concerned about overall weight, but am pretty particular about not...
Thanks. Finding a 99 (or building one) in a 358 is on my bucket list. Assuming I'm able to make this shoot the way I want, this rifle and a second one in 358 will pretty much handle all my hunting needs.
This is turning into one of those “off-the-wall” projects, but I’m having fun with it so will share it here as I watch the snow come down in buckets outside (and sip on a light whiskey as I feel sorry for the Easter Bunny for having to go out on a night like this). Of all the rifles I’ve ever...
