I looked at your picture and had a good laugh -- nice little blast from my past. I worked at a friend's custom aluminum jet boat manufacturing business one winter and spring a number of years ago during my slow time. We had just finished a boat (28' twin engine enclosed cab) and during the...
I'm looking to shoot the same range of bullets (with a little heavier gr bullet on the top end to use on whitetail) and ordered a barrel with a 1:8 twist and 22 inches in length. Haven't got the barrel back yet, and haven't fully decided whether to chamber it in 243 or 6 mm Creedmoor. The .243...
Also, Sightron may be worth looking at. They make a 3-16x42 in their S-Tac line that would probably fit your needs nicely:

This can be found in your price range. You tend to hear very few complaints from Sightron owners.
Congrats on making it thru another year of college! As for scopes in your price range, I'd recommend staying down in the 3-12, 3-15, 4-16 range. In addition to BLKRM's comment about having something lower than 6x at the bottom end for hunting, I think you'll find the amount of time you're...
The 6XC and 6x47Lapua are the other two calibers that are under consideration. Only reason I'm leaning toward the Creedmoor over those two are that they would be more reliant on me handloading (which I'm set up to do) and the convenience of a large choice of factory ammo for the Creedmoor is nice.
The rifle is a late 50's vintage 99 with the rotary mag. My gunsmith has quite a bit of experience working with the 99's, and the rotary mag models are his preference for something like this (though more because the added steel in the base of the action leads to a little stiffer action than 99s...
The donor action is a .308, so I can run with any of the .308 family cartridges or shorter. (Some of the shorter 6mm cartridges like the 6mm BR are a little too short for consistent feeding.)
I just ordered a 6mm bore barrel to drop onto a Savage 99 to use for whitetail, wolves, coyotes, and varmints. I went with a heavy contour (Sendero profile) carbon fiber barrel to retain the light weight and handling of the 99 while dramatically increasing barrel stiffness (and hopefully...
Interestingly enough, I just got the ball rolling on something similar for a 99, and ordered a 22" carbon fiber barrel (trying to keep the weight low to retain 99 handling, while stiffen things up for a little better accuracy). 1/8 twist and 6 mm bore. Current plan is to chamber it for 6mm...
Given your variety of needs and wants, a company that might bear watching right now is Meopta. They announced a new line of scopes (they are calling them the Optika 6 line) at last weeks SHOT show. Includes SFP hunting scopes and FFP scopes as well. Looks like everything has illumination, and...
Your 358 project is what gave me the itch to do that... My goal is to have three 99s -- one in .243 (to be my wolf, coyote, and longer range shooting toy), one in .308 (my daughters current do everything rifle), and one in .358 (my do everything brush gun that gets 90% of my hunting season...
I thought about trying to do it in wood, but my wood skills are greatly lacking for making something like that look good. I'll hold off on changing finish on the cheek piece for a while. This is my project rifle, so at some point this winter the action and barrel are coming off to get changed...
One of the things on my list of "to do" items now for a while has been to find a raised cheek piece to install on my Savage 99 to raise the comb to a height where my eye naturally lines up with the scope. I couldn't find a leather one that looked/functioned like I wanted it to, and all the...
Another vote here for the Burris Signature style rings. I believe the basic Signature rings (whether for 1 in or 30 mm tubes) come standard with pairs of offset bushings up to 10 MOA, while the XTR Signature rings (their tactical version) come standard with pairs of offset bushings up to 20...
I second this! By far my favorite rifle to shoot, whether hunting or target practice. You're not likely to find one that shoots 1/2 MOA, but it's a ball to practice fast follow-up shots with... Currently have two in the gunsafe and am about to welcome a third.
I've only seen one as well. A buddy of mine was given one as a 25th wedding anniversary present by his wife. He nicknamed the shotgun "Bella", adopts an Italian accent whenever he pulls her from the gunsafe, and affectionately calls her his "Italian Mistress"...
