Those look like a spin type of gouge. Something you would see with an overgassed extraction. Pressure still high when bolt turns to unlock.
Mine seems to be shaving the edges. Single load, gas turned off on mine. I expected gas to be high on these. The 62gr not as hot.
With a 20" barrel...
Answered my own question about the sharp rims on the 22 Nosler cases. (22 Nosler thread in Ammunition section)
Shaves brass and imprints them into the case.
Got to the range to shoot some factory 22Nosler ammo.
About 20 rounds of the 62gr and 25 of the 77gr.
The 77gr is definitely loaded hotter.
For comparison I got 2835fps for a ten shot average with IMI 77gr HPBT from a 22" .223 Wylde barrel,
and 3037fps avg from a 20" 22 Nosler. Accuracy was...
Could someone with case swipes post some pictures?
I've looked over the different rifle calibers I have and haven't found a squared off rim like the 22nosler. Anyone have any examples?
I've read where some recommend chamfering the ejector so a case doesn't hang up going in, but what about the...
Noticed that the base is pretty square. I wonder if that will impact cycling.
It will be this coming weekend before I get to shoot some. I have the 62gr. and the 77gr.
I have the ARP 20 inch barrel and a BCA branded side charging upper and BCG. I'm going to start off with the gas cut off.
While I wait for ammo to make it's way from the northwest, I have a question.
Some seem to think the rebated rim of the 22N is a plus on the strength side, some don't.
Has anyone found a cross section image showing the base web?
My barrel came in today.
It's the 20" ARP 7.7 Melonite.
The Extension Diameter was just a tad on the small side, 0.9985" so I "shimmed" it with some high heat exhaust spray paint then polished it down smooth. Lapped the front of the receiver, a side charge BCA Brand, and thermally assembled the...
I keep a broken shell extractor in the range box for everything I carry.
Never had to use one. Yet.
Sort of like taking an umbrella to keep the rain away.
But I do like the brush idea. Thanks for the tip.
Deplorable,
What dies are you using?
I guess at the moment only RCBS and Redding are making them.
I plan on loading mostly the 75gr A-max when my barrel gets here because I have a BUNCH due to a shipping error from a big box sporting goods store. I had to get a special seating stem for my .223...
A headwind coming across the top of a berm/backstop can blow downward.
A little drizzle can also affect POI.
But, first 2 on target, second 2 always low does point to neck tension.
I hardly ever crimp .223.
I have polished down my Lee expanders for just over 0.002" tension.
I also use a...
Bit the bullet and ordered a 22N barrel.
I was looking for something a little longer but settled on a 20" 4150 Melonite 7.7 SPR profile, if nothing else for a starter barrel. I'll be able to experiment with loads and compare them with my 21" .223 Wylde.
Oh boy, experiments :)
I used a 101.5 grain steel case as the light one and a 106.65 grain case as the heavy one.
Light case; 6.577 grams empty, 8.867 grams full of water, 2.290 grams of water (35.34gr).
Heavy case; 6.909 grams empty, 9.145 grams full of water, 2.236 grams of water (34.51gr).
The heavy case is...
WOW DrMike,
I'm not a QL guy but your data is spot on.
I play with an SKS quite a bit and with the 123gr V-max (0.310") and Rel 7.
27gr is about the best point for my particular SKS, a couple tenths less for the wife's.
I get an average of 2450 in my SKS, 2470 in the wife's with 27gr.
I tried...
.223 or 5.56NATO levels?
Hornady 68gr HPBT, 25.4gr CFE223 for 2800fps in the Service Rifle section. For plinking I use 24.6gr
You probably won't make the velocity per the Hodgdon data.
I've never had flaking with Nickel Plated Brass.
Use it in .45, .44, 9, and .357
These are OLD, and the nickel just wears down to yellow :)
The .357 die is a Hornady TiNi. Steel is rusty, insert is fine after years and years.
Gonna be following this thread. I too am looking at putting together a 22N upper. If any of you guys with one could get a guess on the OAL for one of those long bullets, like the 75/80 A-Max it would help tilt my decision.
I already shoot them in both .223/ 5.56 Wylde and NATO chambers, and...
