I always practice with cheaper bullets for the rifle I am planning on using for hunting. Nosler ballistic tips for my Accubond hunting loads or Hornady SSTs for the Hornady Interbonds, Hornady interlocks for Nosler Partitions. I'll sight in with the cheaper bullets and practice all spring and...
Big fan of Forbes, now Barrett Fieldcraft. They just shoot great and many caliber options. Of course I would go with the 270 Win. I also really like my SAKO 85. What a well built factory rifle in many calibers.
A couple of weeks ago a got a new toy; a Kimber 8400 in a 300 win mag. I am very pleased with the workmanship of the steel to wood and the accuracy of this rifle. I started with various 165 gr bullets and got some good accuracy. Everything got real interesting when I switched to 180 gr bullets...
A little more data: I recently purchased a Kimber 8400 in a 300 WM. After a significant break-in shooting session I started the reloading process. I started with a favorite of mine of 165 Nosler Accubond with 77.0 gr of RL 22. This shot well (a little under an inch) and the recoil did not...
The attached data was shot over the past year at various temperature. The 270 was shot out of a Forbes with a 24 inch barrel. The 30-06 is a SAKO 85 with a 22.4 inch barrel. The velocity are a 3 shot averages.

SD, I was out scouting yesterday and saw a cow elk with a bunch of freezer wrap stuck to her sides. Must have been yours reassembled. Ha! I'll bet to get the reaction DRT something nicked the spine. Anyway, congratulations on your son getting an elk.
I think Hornady projected the decline in hunter numbers and made a pivot to target shooting. While many compare the 6.5CM to the 6.5 Swed as a hunting round for large big game (elk and moose), most of the moose shot in the Scandinavian countries are shot on drive or the use of dogs. These are...
I have been shooting the SAKO Super-hammerhead in my SAKO 85 for a couple of years. I have found them to be very accurate and give good velocity. I have been getting 1 to 3/4 in groups with 2710 fps out of a 22 inch barrel. I use the brass for reloading some of my 06 loads and see about 30 fps...
At 68, the key for me has been a variety of different exercises each week. I work on three exercise principles:
1) flexibility
2) strength
3) cardiovascular
Flexibility- I do yoga three times a week to increase flexibility, core strength, and balance.
Strength- I use a local gym twice a week...
I have some 30-06 180 grain ammo and some once-fired and twice 30-06 brass. The ammo sits at a very consistent 2705 fps out of a 22 1/2 sako 85 barrel. The brass gives me an additional 40 fps over the same load with Winchester brass with no signs of pressure gain. It is good stuff.
According to...
I have the SAKO 85 synthetic in a 30-06; it weighs 7lbs 11oz fully loaded (scope, full mag, and sling). I purchased mine from euro-optics at a great price. It is a real shooter when I do my part. I think the SAKO's are as good a factory rifle as you can get.
Your 375 is beautiful! I also have a 1911 Kimber, they are the best! I'm not that good of shot with mine bu it works great and the trigger-- nothing better.
Guy, what do you think of the overall workmanship of the rifle, action and barrel? I have a Forbes 24 the predecessor to the Barrett Fieldcraft and just love the workmanship. What is the barrel length on the 6mm creed?
I sight my rifles (30-06, 270, and 300 win mag) at 250 yards. Groups off the bench to make sure the loads are shooting well enough for hunting. Then I practice at various ranges using a backpack rest, shooting sticks, kneeling, and prone. I also stress myself (I get my heart rate up),I shoot...
Over the years I have used the 270 and 30-06 almost exclusively for my western hunting. With the 270 I have taken a 170 inch bighorn out of the pecos wilderness, a large 7x7 bull elk in the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico. When I started elk hunting all I had was a springfield 30-06 and a 30-30...
My experience with RL 26 is limited variation across 30-80 degree temperatures. I shoot the RL 26 in my 270 and my 300WM. I am a hunter, not a long-range target shooter so some variation is no big deal. I limit my shooting to no more than 400 yards. If my animal is beyond 400 and I can't figure...
