I went to Wyoming with an antelope and mule deer tag in hand and hoping for a good hunt. The antelope and mule deer were better than I had hope for in my preplanning. I was using my Forbes 270 with 130 grain SSTs as ammo. My preseason testing gave me 3138 fps over my magnetospeed chronograph...
Interesting thing about rifles and rifle barrels and the preferences they have for various bullets. My SAKO loves 180 accubonds but does not prefer the 165 grain accubonds. The SAKO does like 165 partition and I am planning on using the partition on a Wyoming mule deer hunt in a few weeks.
Here...
My concern about the Hornady ELDX is the premise of hunting at long range. Hornady has greatly restricted their market for their bonded bullets (Interbond) for a target/hunting bullet. Nosler has kept their excellent Accubond at the forefront of their market share. Overall I stuggle with the...
Having worked north of the Arctic Circle on a couple of environmental/Geology projects I know how hard it is walk let alone run on the tundra. One of the sites where I worked required a bear guard for our protection during the days of work with an electric fence at night. The arctic-grizzly just...
Just read your article; excellent photo's and well written. Another JOC in the making! Is one grizzly enough or would you do it again? I love the use of the 30-06. Awesome bear.
First and foremost I am a hunter who collects guns. I have one custom a interarms mauser with a douglas 24" barrel. I inherited this rifle from my father and it is a very lucky rifle. I also have a semi-custom Forbes 24 rifle which is very light and very accurate. I have two factory rifles both...
A little more data on the 270 with RL-26. I have become very fond of the Hornady 150 Interbond bullet for elk hunting. Unfortunately Hornady is not currently making the bullets so the few I have remaining are cherished. I typically use the Hornady SST for my summer time target shooting because...
I agree that RL-26 and the 270 Winchester are an excellent pair. I have two 270s that both like the powder with 130,140, and 150 bullets. The first 270 is my fathers which was passed down to me many years ago. A 98 Mauser with a 24" barrel also know as "Mr. Lucky". The newer 270 is a Forbes 270...
I have been really happy with my Sako 85 in 30-06 and my Forbes in a 270. Both are very lightweight and shoot extremely well. I also have a Sako a7 (AKA the punisher) in a 300 Win Mag that shoots great but not a lot of fun at the range. I have a Winchester 94 (my dads) that is great. It took a...
In Colorado:
1) Ranching for Wildlife property (good chance of drawing) either sex.
A) Forbes 270 with either 150 grain Hornady Interbond or 140 grain Accubond
B) Sako 85 30-06 with 165 grain Nosler Partition or Hornady Interbond
In Wyoming:
1) Cow tag (good chance of drawing)...
A little clarification on my previous post. I am in awe of some of the target shooting pictures that get posted. It takes real skill to shoot little bug-spots with high power rifles. Being a reloader and hunter I just focus on a different set of goals for my practice time. Yesterday I went to...
While I've posted a few groups that I have shot with my new Sako I am not a big believer in bench rest shooting equating to hunting accuracy. My rifles are sighted in with the loads that I prefer and now I am off the bench. I really don't care if the groups are .5 inches or 1.5 inches at 100...
My Kimber 22 conversion kit is just awesome. It allows me to practice a lot and does not beat me up with recoil. When I switch back to the 45ACP, my 22 practice time shows with positive results.
Both of my Sako's shot the 165's just a tad better than the 180's. With premium bullets I have not had any disappoints on elk. A lot of hunters prefer the 180's, me I'm fine with the 165's for elk.
I use 165 grain 30 cal bullets for elk in my 30-06 and 300 WM. I use interbonds in the 30-06 and Accubonds in the 300. Between the two rifles I have taken 10 elk (7cows and 3 bulls). The last cow 2017 was shot at 80 yards using 30-06 with 165 interbond DRT complete pass-through.
I use 165 gr Accubond in my Sako A7 in a 300wm with very good results for elk. My load is 77.0 gr of RL-22, win brass and federal 215 primers. I am getting a very consistent 3150 out of a 24" bbl and right at an moa at 100 yds.
I am primarily a 270/30-06 hunter for everything. I have shot a...
