I'm with everyoneelse here. 200 yd zero is good. Most hunting ssituations are within 100yds to 200yds anyway.
I've always had 200yd zeros, and never had any problems connecting on game. Prairie dogs on up to elk.
Now, thanks to several scope companies, they make Bullet Drop Compensating...
Completely agree with you Dr. Vette!
Thank you fortthe article post, thar was awesome!
I'm going to do that same exact thing!
Should work very well in my 24" bbl Savage 99!
I was trying to give advice on velocity to keep the kick manageable for his daughter, so she wouldn't pick up the bad habit of flinching.
130 gr monos might work good, but I know the 150's will work just as well, and you don't have to throttle the 300 Savage up to have it work the way it has...
I agree with 6mm Remington!
I would take the 30-06, for which you can get ammo anywhere, in case of possibly forgetting it. Plus it has all the power needed with the 180 gr AB's.
Then for back up, use the 7mm-08. Plenty of power and ranging ability, plus you can find ammo for it almost...
O.k. So....I won't be using my Remington 760 in 6mm Remington. It was getting too expensive to do anything with it. So I traded it for a Remington 760 Gamemaster in .30-06! Which I will be using this year to hunt deer over in the Sam Houston National Forest. Finally found somewhere to go that...
The only bad thing with using a 300 Savage is you won't have the hydrostatic shock that you would have with higher velocity rounds. The partition may be too tough to open all the way. I would try the Ballistic Tips in 150, or the Accubond in 150. I think they would open up and expand correctly...
This is just my opinio, but I think your daughter and you would be better served with a 150 gr Barnes TSX or TTSX, and pushing it along @ 2500 to 2600 fps. The .300 Savage is a mild caliber to shoot anyways. You'll have more deep driving capability, but will also hit harder in case of placing...
If it were that I only had my Remington 760, and deer season overlapped elk season, and the elk of a lifetime presented itself, you better believe I would light it up with my 6mm!
Otherwise, I will specifically use my Savage 99 in .300 Savage, using 180 Nosler BT @ 2400 - 2500 fps, or use my...
If I were to go elk huntin, what would be the biggest one I should go after?
Where would I put the bullet? Neck shot, or vitals?
Broadside shot? Frontal?
Just wanting opinions.
Your suggestions 6mm Remington?
Thanks for the advice Fotis.
Saving up right now for a good analog scale.
I think the dippers are supposed to be used in conjunction with a good scale.
I don'thave a powder measure, yet. And was wondering if they would be a good base line to get the ball rolling, so to speak.
I saw last night that the Swiss are rebarreling their K-31rifles in .308, and using them as high powered match rifles!
Wow! Amazing! I didn't realize the K-31
was that strong. I'm glad it is!
That's what I was wondering! It will make it go BOOM, but not to expect great accuracy.
Well, anyway! Got to blow through it to reload and get better performance.
I know it's becoming more popular now because ammo is more readily available from Prvi Partizan,Grafs & Sons, and Hornady manufacturing new ammo for it, along with brand new brass being made for rreloading.
It helps that it's a .30 cal round too, so there isn'ta lack of bullet weights for it.
