.270 load development help with next step

Thanks for the tips. I have no way of verifying my chrony. This was the first time I ever used it, and don't have anything with a known baseline. It was set 15-20' off the bench. I shoot from a covered area and have to locate the chromy forward to get the right light. Nosler reloading...

.270 load development help with next step

Hey everyone, I have almost reached the max powder recommended by the Nosler reloading guide but am way under the speed advertised. I'm trying to decide how much further I can safely push the load to high 2900's. I'm trying to develop a highly accurate load that can still hold a tight group...

Help determining best OAL for my rifle

Yes this makes sense. For the short-term, I'm going to use a manual method of calculating distance to my lands. I have a case with a cutout groove that holds a bullet securely, but allows movement. Based on instructions on this forum, and illustrations on youtube, I think I can take several...

Help determining best OAL for my rifle

Dr. Vette: We were talking different comparators, and even then I got it wrong. I have the Honrady Headspace comparator kit. While I'm still trying to determine exactly how to use this I now know that you were describing a oal comparator, that basically measures from ogive to end of case...

Help determining best OAL for my rifle

Sorry for late reply. How do I measure OAL with a comparator? I have the Hornady comparator set and am trying to understand how to use it for neck size measurements. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

How many rounds before a barrel rest?

Probably doesn't matter, but this was at 200 yards. Gun and I can hold MOA at 100. I do suspect the flyers are operator error, but can't be 100% certain.

Which gun rest for testing loads

Works quite nicely. I picked up the X7 system from Amazon for about $125. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007LL ... UTF8&psc=1 If you use cat-litter and sand, they are't as heavy as just sand and work fine.

How many rounds before a barrel rest?

Thanks for all the input. I made it to the range yesterday and shot 55 rounds over 3 hours. I would shoot three and the barrel would be pretty warm to the touch but not hot. I waited 5-8 minutes before next group, at which time the barrel was still warmer than outside temp's (50 degrees or...

How many rounds before a barrel rest?

Thanks everyone for the input. Since posting this, I've Google'd and read up a lot on running hot barrels. Not a good thing apparently for a hunting rifle. It kind of explains my first day at the range with my new rifle. I shot 4 boxes of ammunition, and effectively chased the reticle all...

Help determining best OAL for my rifle

All, Thanks for all the feedback. The thread that inspired my interest in this round was posted by Rovert a year ago. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17744 His research resulted in a very tight group of BT's and AB's using RL22 and an OAL of 3.320. I know that where the lands are on his rifle is...

How many rounds before a barrel rest?

I probably should have asked this in one of my other posts, but I forgot. Might be better anyway, since it is a different topic. I have 20+ boxes of winchester power-points to shoot, because I want to reload the brass with Nosler BT's and AB's. I figure it will provide brass that has been...

Help determining best OAL for my rifle

Hey guys, Thanks to everyone that helped me work up a plan of attack for my first foray into reloading for a rifle. I have all my components, and am ready to start working up my load. I need a little help understanding the OAL for my rifle. Caliper: Mitutoyo Rifle: Browning X-Bolt .270 win...

    Reloading plan and questions

To everyone that has chimed in to welcome me, and to ditto the recommendation to not under-estimate the BT's and to check with SPS frequently - THANK YOU. I knew this was a pretty healthy forum during my lurking. This thread has saved me some bucks already, and I feel like I have a plan. I...

    Reloading plan and questions

A big thanks to everyone the chimed in. I now have on order 200 130gr accubonds and 250 130gr ballistic tips (hunting). I know that a lot of white tails have been killed with BT's, but I've watched so many videos of the 130gr AB at work that I think I just gotta try. If I can catch AB's on...

    Reloading plan and questions

Thanks for the great tip. I was going to get the deluxe kit (http://leeprecision.com/reloading-dies/ ... 3-die-set/) and add the factory crimp. Glad to know I don't need the factory crimp. I "think" I'll want a de-priming die that will knock out primers in whatever cartridge without re-sizing...

    Reloading plan and questions

I'm hunting Virginia White Tails. Plenty have been harvested with low price retail rounds so I'm sure the BT's will work fine. It didn't occur to me to run AB's and BT's in the same way as I intended on running AB's and PP's but it makes perfect sense. I'm glad I asked and everyone has chimed...

    Reloading plan and questions

Thanks. The SPS stuff all says "blemished". I don't care about cosmetic issues, but do these fly as true as stuff that made the cull? What is the 130 BT?

    Reloading plan and questions

PJGunner, Thank you for a very through answer. Good point on periodic full case resizing. I don't expect to be reloading my hunting rounds often. Once worked up, they will be probably be loaded into 1st or 2nd generation brass. Once I have a load worked up, I'll load 20-40 rounds and that...

    Reloading plan and questions

DrMike: Good point about saving money. It is not so much I want to save on my annual budget (as if I had one LOL) but I want to be able to send hundreds (or maybe thousands) of rounds down the range to advance my effective range from 100 to 200, and progressively 300+ yards. Retail accubond...

    Reloading plan and questions

Hi guys, Brand new to the board, and brand new to reloading rifle rounds. Can you please review my objective and plan and let me know if I'm on the right track please? I know folks prefer terse to verbose, so I'll try to keep it short. Objective: Develop two similar rounds, one for hunting...
