I'll probably buy a box to try in my 7-08. Found them at Midway for 26 bucks. I wonder if they are a little bit "tougher" than the 140 Sierra GK's. The GK is a great bullet but can be just a tad soft, depending!
I understand that some wonky things can happen to bullets at closer range when encountering bone but I'm curious as to what caliber this bullet happened to be?
I used Partitions for many years and for the most part I always had good accuracy and success with Partitions. I know that bullet cost is the least expensive part of any hunt but I have quit using them. Regardless of my accuracy with Partitions I only get to hunt deer and hogs and with my type...
My old RCBS Powder Pro scales have been ticking right along since 2000. I couldn't justify spending that sort of money. On another note, my old Powder Pro's were made by PACT right here in the USA. Who manufactures the new scales??
I have used the 154 and 139 gr SST bullet for several years now and have killed 20-25 deer with them with most shots within 65 yds and have not experienced any of what you described here but isn't it great that we have choices.
Ive never used the 162's but have used the 139 a little bit and they shot good, can't remember the numbers but I like the 154's the best. I use the 139 SST in my 7-08 from time to time. Find yourself an accurate load, with good speed, within the design parameters of the bullet and just go kill...
I thought I was the only one with that problem. Every dadgum time we go to Wally World a skein or two or ten has to come home with us. I try to not say much about it due to my "weakness" tho. LOL
Im getting in the low 2900's, with 1/2 to 3/4 inch accuracy @ 100. When they first came out they were a little soft, just like the first years of the Ballistic Tips. Im not sure whether they toughened the jacket or if they added a little more antimony to the lead but whatever it was they hold...
Ive owned my 280 for nearly 30 yrs. Probably killed 200 plus deer with it over the years with the longest shot being 340 yds. I used Nosler bullets for the better part of it's life but due to running across a deal on several thousand 154 gr SST's several years ago I now use the Hornady SST's...
My rifles do not foul that quick but when accuracy falls off and they need a little cleaning Sweet's 7.62 and a good nylon brush has always worked well fore my bore cleaning needs, along with a little JB paste. I push a couple patches with Sweet's, let it soak a few minutes, brush the bore, dry...
Top buck was shot with my 280 Rem, 57.5 grs of IMR7828 and a 154 gr SST. Range was 80yds. The way you see this laying is the way I found him.
Second buck was shot with my 7-08. 42.5 grs of Varget with a 140 gr Sierra Gameking. Range was 50 yds
I use Winchester primers exclusively due to having thousands and thousands of them. They were bought for about 30-35 dollars per thousand.
Only once in my reloading years have I found that primers make that much of a difference for me. I will qualify that by saying, I only load to hunt and even...
Magnum vs Standard strength primers, it will never hurt to experiment. I've tried Magnum primers in some of my loads for kicks and giggles and only once did a load shoot better, and that was a 7-08, most loads shot the same while using the magnum primer. I did have a load one time that shot...
. With the unobtainability of any Alliant powders I got off that wagon several years ago. Before the Chinademic I found a place that was getting out of the reloading business.
I bought all the IMR-7828 they had at 14 per pound which turned out to be 10 lbs. Also bought all the H414, and Big...
