Boone and Crockett on Long Range Shooting

Doc, after 54 years of hunting I agree with you completely. Much more satisfaction in putting your abilities against the animal you're hunting.

    .30-30 at 300 yards today

Had an opportunity a couple of years ago to see what my 336 in .35 Rem wearing a 1.5X5 Leupold would do at extended ranges. We have a 600 yard range that wasn't being used at the time by our military shooters and I started at 100 yards and worked out to 400 (just for fun). Out to 200 everything...

    We have no strategy.

I have a bad feeling that Sept. 11th might be more interesting than the government is planning for. This morning's news related that ISIS people have been found in Juarez, Mexico which is just across the border from Texas. Obama's open borders policy is really starting to screw things up "royally".

Wow he have a classy forum guys!

Good Job fotis. We definitely have a better group of people on this forum. We can agree to disagree on occasion but it's done properly.

    338 RUM at 200 yds

Excellent group Jim. My .338RUM will outshoot me any day of the week. I've found it to be an excellent wind bucker also. My main bullet is either a 225 grain prohunter or a 225 grain partition. I've been able (on a good day) to put either bullet in an inch at 200 yards. The shining star of this...

    Range day today

Fotis that advertised velocity from Weatherby was probably with Norma loads. Their right at the hairy end of max loads.

    338WM 200g Hotcor / 225g SST / 250g Interlock SP

Vince, try and get your hands on some Sierra 225 grain pro hunters. I've used them on Elk and penetration/weight retention is excellent.

    Good artical. 35 Remington

I've used only the 200 grain factory load in my 336 and it's been a one shot stopper on many occasions.

    Hog Invasion.

I believe Florida is no#1 for Hogs. We can hunt them 24 hours a day and 12 months a year but there doesn't seem to be any dent in the population. Go in any field down here and all you see is churned up dirt where they've been rooting. Ranchers/farmers hate them and usually permission with no fee...

    Northeast hunting rifle and caliber

I've used both a 7-08 and an 06 for my Maine hunting and never had a complaint with either. I would opt for a lighter weight and shorter rifle as Northeast hunting can get tight.

.30-06 150 grain Accubond on Elk

Dr. Mike is on the money with shot placement. I can count on the fingers of a half of a hand how many times an Elk stood perfectly at 90 degrees to me. I would opt for the largest caliber that I feel comfortable shooting. I'd rather have it in my freezer than watch someone else take a shot at my...

Divernhunter, thanks for your input. A lot of us are thinking what you're saying.

    Leica CRF 1600 B

agree one hundred percent Charlie, I've used their rangefinders and Binoculars for a lot of years and never had an issue. Quality is top notch.

UN Resolution defeated in the Senate

already sent off a nasty gram to our illustrious Bill Nelson. This is the guy who sent me an E-mail stating that he grew up on a farm and always had firearms and did a lot of shooting.

    Top 5 VINTAGE northwoods cartridges

Started out with a 336 in .35 Remington. Excellent cartridge for putting deer in the freezer. Tried the 06, went to 7mag, and after 54 years the 7-08 and another 336 in .35 Remington are my main deer cartridges for the Northeast.

270 gr Partition or 260 gr Accubond?

I've used partitions in a number of different calibers and have been very satisfied with their performance. A long time ago I was the owner of a number 1 in 375 and the partitions shot lights out. With the size of game you are going to be hunting 1/2 inch is not going to make a bit of difference...

    Recoil control on the bench

Get yourself the heavier model Past recoil pad. I use one exclusively for my .338RUM and it works. That rifle does jump a little.

    .223 For Deer

Agree with you Charlie. That sounds like hunting Elk with a .243. Believe it or not I've seen some big deer come out of florida.

    Winchesters????

Woody, your description of the RUM recoil factor is on the money. 8 shots out of my .338RUM and I'm ready for an aspirin. My rifle is also 9lbs. but doesn't seem to make a heck of a lot of difference.
