I'm afraid mine will be the same as the last 5 years....Find one good load for each rifle and stick with it. These dang powder and bullet companies keep releasing new products that I cant seem to resist trying.
When I was running my 243 with the 105 Amax I had outstanding results with H1000. If I still had it, I would give RL-26 a serious look. I'm currently pushing a 105 VLD at 3270 fps out of a 26" 6CM with groups in the .3" range with 47gr of RL-26.
I played with BLC2, CFE 223, and H380. This was the best group out of all of them. Pretty sure the flyer was from a round that for some reason ended up with .007" shorter than the others. Going to go measure some bullets to see if that may be the issue. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with this...
Thanks guys.
They seem to hold their accuracy down range pretty well. I put one on the 1,200 yard gong first shot and then put a 5" 3 shot group on the 10"Hx16"W 900 yard gong. I really think that I could have had a better groups at 900 but the first two shots were right at the bottom of the...
Well, they work on elk.......
That is the exit on a slightly uphill 620 yard broadside shot. It blew clear through and did a fair amount of damage on its way through. There is a second shot in her and you can see the blood running out of her right on the front edge of the shoulder. After the...
When I was shooting the 140 Bt out of my 280 AI I had outstanding results with RL-17, and was over 3200 with a 24" tube. When I switched to the 140 AB however it didn't work so well in my gun. I ended up using RL22 and 7828 for the 140 AB. I have a friend that is using RL-23 with the 162 ELDX...
Guy makes a very valid point. Drop is easier to account for than wind drift.
I have been fortunate enough to have been around a pile of elk killing. I have seen several elk killed with Partitions, Accubonds, TTSX, ballistic tips, and a few with the vld type bullets. I have only witnessed one...
I think I'm done. This was 86.5 of Rl-26 on top and 87 gr of Rl-26 on the bottom. Should be around 2920 fps. Ill get some more over the chrony and down the range tomorrow. I'm pretty dang happy. Hopefully I can get on into an elk soon.
I have been running rl-26 in my wife's 26" 6CM. 48 gr gave me slight pressure signs but .3" groups with a 105 vld doing 3260. I love the speed and group size but i think the es is a bit large. Hoping to run it out further later. I might also drop down to 47.5 as it shot just as well.
I tried...
.......and JD338 asked me to post these. He smoked this whitetail with them! So apparently they work on game as well. Not sure he used enough gun
The way I had them set up they were each about a foot of water. They are pretty heavy plastic chemical jugs so it's pretty rare to get any bullet out of the third jug.
Played with Retumbo a bit more today. Bottom is 92.5 gr and 3.7550". The top is 93gr. and 3.760". Both 4 shot groups.
I also set up four 2.5 gal chem jugs to try to catch one. It blew clear through the first one with some shratnal blowing out the backside. The second jug it pretty much punched...
Looking at the numbers, it sure caries some energy for a long ways if the advertised BC is accurate. Time will tell on that.
In all honesty, it doesn't really do anything much different than my 250 VLD load does at hunting distances, but gets me back to shooting Oregon made bullets. That's a...
I have been running RL-26 in my RUM with the 250 VLD for a few years. It works great and I am getting about 3,000 fps and very good groups. I would start at 87 gr and work up to 89 depending on brass/rifle. Mine shot best at 88.5. Please work up.
I haven't played with it much with the 225 AB...
