Wow, that's a sucky time for ML. After the Orange Army has stomped around the woods for a week or two, the deer are skittish and often nocturnal. Here in KY, there's about a 3-week break between the end of rifle season and the beginning of ML. Allows things to settle down a bit.
With my .243, I have taken deer with the 100gr Sierra GameKing, 95gr Nosler BT, and 85gr Sierra GKHP. With my loaner rifle, my young lady friend has killed 5 using the 100gr Federal Power Shock soft point. When my kids were young, they killed several using 100gr Remington CoreLokt.
Can't help you with the Rossi, but my friend has a Henry 44 mag and he kills deer regularly with it. Three this fall, IIRC. He's using 300gr XTP hand loads.
So, a little post-butchering update:
The doe was quartering to at about 30-35 yards when I shot. The bullet smashed the left front shoulder, traveled diagonally thru the body cavity, passed thru the right haunch, and stopped under the hide on the right rear leg. I don't have the carcass to...
Took a nice doe this morning with my .50 Hawken. I had the sights replaced 2 years ago with some Williams FireSights, and they really make a difference for these old eyes. 370gr Maxiball put her straight on the ground.
Well, there's a difference between powder/carbon fouling and copper fouling. What he's saying is, clean the powder fouling and don't worry about the copper fouling.
And yes, I never clean my rifles until after the season is over, either. And when I shot smallbore competition in college, we...
Personally, I trim every time I load. With one of these devices, it's real easy and doesn't take long at all. After I resize, I just run it thru the stations on the prep center. Keeps everything uniform that way.
Just to be clear, the ones I mentioned were not seconds. I was just making the point that this price was better than you can usually get on the seconds.
This is the correct one, and it's still a very good price at $152, with free shipping.
