In a crowded safe, are gun socks a good idea to prevent scratches?
If so, what is your favorite fabric? Absorbent cotton or hydrophobic polyester?
Safe is not in a commonly humid climate.
These are 50 yard shots, as they are reduced loads. (Wish they were 100 yard results) (Also wish they still made I4759) Sure is fun when everything comes together.
25-270, Springfield 03 action, Grandad Oscar's stock, 1960's Redfield Scope
Left is 10 shot group using 19 grains Surplus...
A load that previously was giving nice 3 shot sub moa groups. Some sub 1/2".
This time I got an 1 1/2"+ horizontal string and much higher and varied velocities.
The variables
1. This time tried magnum primers
2. set my bipod on a slick piece of fabric like my benchrest online friend recommended...
Plinking with some old cast bullets. 25-270, 80 grain cast bullets, 12 grains Unique.
One failed to fire.
Buddy shows me there is no primer in the cartridge???
Look into the cartridge box.
I knew the primer pockets were a bit loose---
Have a decapping die with a broken pin. None of the pins fit that are available locally or at Midway, Amazon etc. I called RCBS.
Apparently I have a first run die with no date that was put together with parts unknown.
So for free they just mailed me the whole threaded rod and pin assembly.
Scheels in Sparks has primers as little as 49 per k.
Bi mart in Deer Park, Cheney etc also has CCI primers at 49/K.
The General Store in Spokane has reloading components on sale.
North40 in various NW towns. Spokane etc has powder on sale. Example Staball 6.5 for $40. IMR powders about $50
Have a super lightweight 308 with a 2-7 power scope I have been using for mule deer in steep mountains. Best bullet so far accuracy wise is a 178 ELD X at 2550 fps.
Would like to us the rifle for elk in the steep and wondering which bullet I have on hand to use. Distance is limited by the...
So am considering getting some seconds from Midway that appear from purchasers comments to be the Hornady ELD X but with a flat poly point instead of a sharp one.
Would mostly be using them for target. Just wondering how to figure the change in BC versus the first quality items and if it is...
I have seen people say that Magnum Primers are useful with Ball powders, esp. in cold weather. Would that be a thing with the new Winchester Staball powders?
Just got back from the High Buck hunt in WA. Rained on the scramble in. My Leupold scope mounts rusted on the first day of rain!
Is this a common thing? I have several other mounts old and new that have been in more prolonged wet weather, even coastal sea air, that didn't do this.
Any thoughts?
Have a bunch of 25 caliber cast bullets. A variety. About half are not lubed yet, could be lee tumble lubed if you want to keep it simple. Weights from about 85 to 120 grain. Some checked, some not, the unlubed ones could have a check added. Most my dad and grandad cast. A few commercial.
Free...
Looks like I get to try the early season High Buck hunt. Probably in the Pasayten Wilderness . Any advice? I imagine it could be warm temps and where we are going takes at least a day to hike in. Keeping meat cool could be a challenge. Be at least two of us, maybe 4. 3 point minimum and I hear...
Hybrid steel/nickle for reloading. Lighter, Stronger, Faster for your speeding bullet. Like the cases for the 7mm Backcountry?

Having success with old SR 4759 and 25 caliber match bullets for light 1700 fps loads. I sure wish they would bring back this powder. Anyway I a had a great couple of hours at the range. These loads have no kick. 18 grains of SR4759 and a 100 grain Sierra Match bullet (2nds). The 25-284 used...
Loaded some 223 grain cast bullets for the 30-06. 25 grains Reloder 7. Seated to the lands. 100 yards with some wind. Everything the same except the brass.
Top of photo old military brass I found at the range. Foreign stuff with a 1969 date.
Bottom same load but with RP brass. I stopped...
Rumor has it that IMR4227 is rebranded H4227 (which isn't on the current Hodgdon burn chart). I see some nice heavy loads for 38 special using H4227 and I have a couple of pounds of IMR 4227. Okay to use IMR for H data?
