Just sharing my experiences with a number of presses over the years.
RCBS Jr. got this as a hand me down. A little rough from moisture but made some fine 30-06 with it. For sure a serviceable press.
I would not be afraid to use one.
Redding BigBoss II, my favorite press so far. Can handle...
I put a linkage upgrade kit on my summit.
About to set a new thread on presses… but want you to pay attention to the retention screws on base of your summit(2 on each side). Mine have worked loose several times. Hit them with blue lock-tight this time.
45/70 can be heavy recoilling. My 1800fps 325’s were zeroed, and I did some 2300 gps 300 grain bullets. Knocked it 6” off zero.
Not sure how I will resolve. It has a mid range Vortex on it. That’s the first Vortex that didn’t hold zero solidly. I’ve had a few Burris’s in the past and they...
Sorry, I would advise don’t shoot. Have had too many experiences with ammo made by others that wasn’t well marked. For instance
A box of 270 Winchester that was labeled 130gn Nosler partitions, but the box had 130’s, 150’s and a grand slam bullet.
Had like 7-8 boxes of these handloads.
Crimped...
Thank you all for sharing. I’ll try those NPT’s 200’s. Impressive the VLD has performed on heavy game. Would not have tried it on a Grizzly!
Jim, thanks for tip on the hollow point and polishing media…
Well, had surgery Thursday, it’s not a pleasant one. Feeling it through pain meds.
Both sons called and chatted dad up. Amazing how good kids voices can make you feel!
So for this 300 WSM, for thin skinned game,
I’m thinking Berger VLD-Hunting 168’s. I think that’s going to work well.
For...
Surgery Thursday… so thankful surgeon made room in the schedule for me.
I did a good job on ACL repair rehab back on 2001 and 2010… so aside from being older, still have same internal drive to recover fully(even if it includes some range of motion lost or strength…
I did make some test loads...
Thank you for the prayers for a quick strong recovery! At present.. just a good nights sleep without waking every 30-45 minutes would go a long way… so much to be thankful for! Blessings to you Dr Mike!
Best Regards Mark
PS Sean doing great in SC as a Rheumatologist. He’s at the VA in...
Would appreciate a Quick load report that shows powder choices for:
300 WSM
Berger VLD - Hunting (30510)
24” barrel
Lapua brass
Federal 215
COAL will be approximately 2.860”
(Jam is 2.906)
I have a good selection of powders.
My Sierra Game King HP (165) break in bullets with IMR4350 65.5 are...
That is exactly what I’d hope to find.
Based on my experiences, and happily no damaged equipment…. I’ll be sorting all this ammo out.
Hate to toss so much brass, but it’s better than tossing a gun later…
So long journey. The old news is May 2020 we were flooded by a pair of dams, one breached (basically catastrophic failure mid embankment(blow out)) and the downstream dam failed(overtopped and eroded away the embankment).
My reloading gear and ammo were all flooded and submerged for 3 days and...
I’d probably start by getting some top notch brass, ie Norma, Lapua… maybe starline if they are on a budget. I’d get some Nosler Ballistic Tips in 130 gn (assuming white tail).
I found RL17 and H4831sc capable of 2-5fps for SD with starline and Norma brass in my pre64 model 70. RL17 54.1...
Thank you! I’m wondering if one of my expanders is Janky. I think I have 100 pieces of starline in 3030. 50 pieces are pretty good. Neck thickness is within 0.002x”.
The other 50 are in various stage of being fired 1x or loaded still ( had a bake off with Nosler CTBT RN(for 3030) and some...
So my Marlin 336 XLR ( remlin micro groove)
Has shot no better than 1.25” at 100 yards.
I find that satisfactory, but it was difficult to get there. I think I might have found the issue/irregularity… I got the Hornady kit to measure neck thickness and I found a lot of my brass has an abrupt...
I actually got to try Mountain Lion and it was amazing. Moose is very high on my list. Have a trapper friend who eats it all and picks beaver over all!
