Anything you meet in the NY woods will succumb to a well placed 140-160gr bullet from your 280AI. Just choose the one that shoots best in your new rifle. I wouldn't worry about the BT for Blackies either. Especially the 150 or 160gr versions. I use to shy away from their explosive terminal...
Savage, the never appreciated as much as it should be, rifle manufacturer. Those are great loads and pretty nice trigger skills there.
Another happy Marlin XL/XS-7 owner too. I have yet to see or hear about a dissatisfied owner. That .270 load is perfect. Both accuracy and velocity wise...
Glad to see you get a chance to stretch that Mauser out after all the work and investment. Looks like it was worth all your efforts! I have had good results using IMR-4350 and the 110gr AB. Hopefully a fat Mulie will step out for you this fall and you can put that PT to good use.
I am impressed with the Cabelas Armor Xtreme rifle cases I own. You can find them on sale occasionally and they cannot be beat at their sale price. They rival the Pelican case I own...
With just one sample down the tube I would tweak my charge weights one more time before doing any OAL changes. What you do know is: You've found your max at 76.5gr and the 75.5gr load looks promising. I would load 74.8gr, 75.2gr, 75.5 gr and 75.8gr and see if you get any consistency with the...
This has been my experience with Federal brass as well. I get 3-5 working loads out of them before the primer pockets loosen beyond tolerance. I have shot some 7-8 times out of my .270Win using 130gr bullets at ~2835fps and their primer pockets are tight.
I do believe that this calls for some jug busting!
An acquaintance of mine swears by the 200gr Hornady's from a 358win. I couldnt get them to shoot well from my BLR. The extra 200fps out of the Whelen may make a bit of difference for in your face work but I wouldn't think it would game changing.
That's the best part of load development. Once you have good loads you can work on the biggest variable in the formula. You! Looks like a great day at the range. I hate being tied to the bench and bags.
I have a P239 chambered in 357Sig and it is my favorite carry piece. The recoil is snappier than other pistol chamberings. That pistol has never experienced a failure to date. I have a replacement 9mm barrel for it to keep cost down somewhat.
Yeah, doesn't help me much when I wear my uniform to and from work or if I need to leave the base during work hours. Heck, that unlucky Brit wasn't even wearing his uniform. I'm certain there wont be any copycat terrorists in the good ole USA tho....
