Been hunting hard for a very good water bok we've seen a couple of times. Hiked 8 miles yesterday with 2000 foot of elevation gain one blown stalk on our part another when we crept into a herd of Cape Buffaloe. That got exciting. Today we passed on three bulls trying to get in on the bull...

    Nyala done right!

I gave a Nyala a hard look this morning but I already have a couple. I think they are my favorite. I think they should always be on the list. Good luck on your hunt.

We were just a short bit into the day when the PH spotted the bull almost a mile away. Headed his way, looping down into a draw for quite a while. We snuck out of the draw where we thought we would have him at a little less than 300. Turned out he was just 120 yards facing. Spent the rest of the...

My room, very warm And comfortable, A bit spartan perhaps but I'm paying for a hunt on one million acres of free range. Been warned to watch out for a Cape buffalo when I get up in the morning. What the hell I am up. Need to get another hour if I can!

Yep, could have gotten the binos in but I was being a little too optimistic. Gun and ammo made it fine. Did you get clearance to go?

Had a spot of bother getting to the lodge, we saw a huge elephant, 80 pounder, off the highway a bit. That looked like a good bull says I. Should we go have a look, says my PH, Mark. Our distraction proves our undoing, hit an enormous pot hole blow a tire, head for camp after a bit, but take a...

Had a good seat got some sleep but little after I got to the hotel, City Lodge, don't even leave the terminal. Pre approved on the rifle made it easy. Walked by a guy from Texas I guessed trying to explain the second amendment to three RSA cops. Saw him later, we had already had a couple beers...

So far, pretty good. I avoided a herd of elk crossing the highway about 10miles from the house. Would have made a good scene in a car chase movie. Made it to Boise in fine style after that. Been sitting on the runway for 1/2 hour, that's going to cut my connection short in Atlanta. But I'm not...

Not that I wouldn’t shoot a really good one, I’m looking for different species this time. This outfit does have very good Kudu so if I see something pushing 60 inches, I might use something other than my binoculars to look at him :)

There is a process for taking your own, many choose to avoid the headaches and use one of the outfitters rifles. I used one of my outfitters 300wm on my first trip. A Hill Country Rifle wearing a Swarovski scope. It was fine and accurate, I did miss a bushbuck at 300 yards forgetting the rifle...

Been following the weather reports for Bedford, Eastern Cape, RSA. They’ve been getting quite a bit of rain though the 10 day forcecast looks good. Lows in the high 40s highs in the 60s what’s not to like. Pre-approved permits have arrived, all that is left to do is go thru my gear and get...

    somewhat impressed

I have often thought the 338 Federal in an AR platform the perfect ( 16 inch barrel, collapsing stock, reflex sight, light and a good tactical sling) float plane, boat or truck gun for Alaska. I was set to have one built a couple years ago but didn’t get around to it. For a working rifle while...

What is your favourite metric cartridge?

I had a big 8 for a number of years. Elk killing son of a gun. Eventually ran into issues getting good bullets so had it rebarrelled into a 338 Jarrett. No shortage of good bullets now, the 8mm is a great one.
