RL338, what was your velocity at 55 grs W748?
Very late to the party here... Alliant 2000-MR if available, is pushing the 250 Speer to 2630 fps in my 25" 35 AI with barely measurable case head expansion (.0001"-.0002"). Speer data shows it pushing the 250 Speer to over 2700 fps in a standard...
Honestly, unless one of those two TTSX bullet weights shoots markedly better than another out of your gun, take the one that gives you the highest velocity at the max range, 400 yards, you have specified in your post.
It's not a 338-06, but I've been shooting at 200 TTSX out of the 35 Whelen...
Agree, in order to see more than one powder brand, you need to leave all the powder brand boxes unchecked. Can't check IMR and Hodgdon for example like you used to and then select from the specific powders you want to view. A pain in the butt.
I was a ways off, watching another clearing and heard a shot from an area that could've been where my sons had gone to set up for the evening sit. Waited 10 minutes and called on the radio but no one responded so I figured it wasn't them. Then I turned the radio on at the appointed time a bit...
My youngest son, at age 23 got his first elk with the .270 Win lobbing out a 110 TTSX at 3350 fps. The elk came up a drainage. Lead cow kept coming, and he was sure he'd be shooting in self-defense as it was coming right at him. At 60 feet he said enough is enough and put that 110 TTSX dead...
DD, was that 200 TTSX load at 2950 fps with CFE 223 as well? Never worked with it and the 200 gr bullets. It didn't look as promising because it's a bit on the slow side compared to power pro varmint.
As well, 2950 FPS in a standard chamber and 24 inch barrel meshes pretty well with my AI and...
TD, wasn't wanting to give any impression of an argument. He pioneered the engineering and they're wonderful as you and I have known for a good while now. 👍
My counterpoint would include, as you so properly mentioned, rifles are entities unto themselves. There are rifles that show no...
Hey guys, thought I'd give you the heads up. Barnes has the 200 TTSX in stock. I double checked again tonight. I ordered a couple boxes the other week and they just arrived.
I took my first elk in 2002 with my 35 AI. The original 225 gr Barnes X flat base did the trick in one shot and straight down at 225 yds. I got one elk with the 250 original X flat base and then 3 more with the 200 original X flat base. Had a fit of nostalgia and took two elk with the 250...
TD, I'm not sure I can go along with another 200 FPS from AI chamber. The AI chamber when running equal pressures might be worth 1/4 of that gain. I get more from my 25" barrel (using 25-30 fps/inch) than will from the case capacity increase with the 35 AI, IMO.
Rick Jamison did an article...
What is your barrel length?
Reality is any shooter of the Whelen back in the day would not believe what the old gal is capable of with newer powders. 2900 or more fps from a 200 gr bullet, 2800 or more from a 225 and 2700+ from a 250 gr without straining things. And the fact a 200 gr bullet...
Fwiw, I loaded a series with Alliant Power Pro varmint under the 200 grain Power Hammers but haven't been to the range yet. I worked up to 3030 fps with that powder and the 200 TTSX without undue case head expansion (but not going to push it more) as posted at the beginning of the thread.
If I...
Nice, bob_dobalina! I know there are other Barnes users besides us, but I can sure see where the different perspectives on what makes a favorite manufacturer come from.
Something can be a favorite, even if I can't get it. As shared, I look at it from the favorite bullet for hunting view. I...
I'm looking at this with respect to favorite hunting bullets based on use in the field, not necessarily overall availability from a specific manufacturer for typical target shooting or practice.
However I can see availability is propping up manufacturers votes as much as bullet performance...
