Seems like when I make a plan for what bullet/powder combo a rifle will shoot, the rifle tells me something totally different. I have 2 7-08's, one shoots heavy bullets great and one likes the 120 gr NBT's.
I hear 20-25 fps per inch, but you are correct in there are many variables such as powder burn rate, bearing surface to name a few. If your shortening and re-crowning, you may be more accurate. I would think a .280 with a 22" barrel that's accurate would be as good an all around cartridge as...
My late father used O-rings where the de-capping pin screwed into the sizing die body on RCBS dies, he said that the pin would find it's own center and the neck's would be straighter. I have been using those same dies for years and I agree fully to his advice.
A few bullets not yet mentioned are the 120 TTSX or the 120 NBT. I have 2 7-08's and both are finicky. One likes heavy bullets and shoots the 162 gr. ELDX and the other shoots 120 NBT's. Neither rifle shot the 140 partition well after extensive testing. I do hear great things about the 140 gr...
I commercial fished crab, salmon, halibut and cod out of Kodiak, Dutch and Bristol Bay since 1988. The land is vast, unforgiving and amazing all rolled into one. Currently I only fish the sockeye run in Bristol Bay where I have a gillnetter in Naknek.
Thanks for the reply, I did take notice during the plant tour of what they were loading at the time and the powder (very large) cans were labeled Reloder 15.
Well said, not opposed to long range shooting, I am opposed to shooting farther away when a closer shot was attainable. Makes me wonder at how many long shots are taken nowadays where there isn't a follow up because the shooter thought he/she missed and the distance to find out was so great...
1st time on the Nosler forum, although some powders are rebranded i.e. w760-h414, I found out recently how lot to lot variations can be extreme. I used identical 7-08 components and had an average of near 100 fps variation between two different bottles of Hybrid 100v. I do have a question, how...
