I ended up with a Browning A Bolt II 300WM in a trade.
I had heard horror stories on removing barrels from these actions but it was not any harder than a Vanguard to remove, I did have to use a lathe to cut a small recess in front of the receiver and heat the barrel to break the Loctite, then...
They do not sell the Federal Tipped Fusion as a component bullet yet, I got lucky and found a guy who had 400 of them on Gunbroker and I bought them all. Terminal Ascent availability is spotty, When I bought I got enough for a lifetime.
I get a lot of "pulled" bullets off GunBroker, things you...
I know I am very late to the -party on this post but, The Bondstrike is a world class bullet, maybe one of the best made. I shoot them in 30 Nosler, 26 Nos;ler, and 6.5-284 and they expand wider then any other bullet I have used and hold together even on close shots! Bondstrike and Terminal...
Well, I zeroed it and then shot that group so about 10 rounds now. These magnums heat up so quickly you have to let it cool and do not get to shoot a ton at the range. The M24 taper super heavy barrel helps, I shot the 7 round string back to back with no flyers but it was hot after!
I originally built this with a to light for caliber barrel and it was problematic. I re-barreled with a M24 taper Faxon barrel.
Out at the range today, the rifle is shooting the federal fusion tipped 180gr over 91.5gr of N570 into a single hole, 7 shot group all can covered with a dime. Seems...
I might at some point go back and flute it, right now I am moving my CNC mill I typically use so I couldn't. Mostly, heavy rifles do not bother me as I drive up to my deer condos and walk up the steps to get inside. Not far to carry :)
Here is the newly rebuilt version
I started by pulling the 300 RUM barrel that was to light for caliber, it would throw shots after just 2 rounds due to heat.
The action is a Savage 110
The stock is a Bell and Carlson
I added AICS bottom metal and Mag
The barrel is a FAXON M24 Contour Blank...
Thought the issue went away, I was wrong it raised its ugly head yesterday. So today I pulled the lighter barrel off and have a nice M24 taper heavy 27" barrel in. my lathe ready to chamber. Done with the lighter barrel, it just cannot handle the heat! Hopefully this new much heavier barrel will...
I have yet to meet anyone IRL that has a 6.5-300wby that shoots worth a poop. The 26 Nosler however is just a tack driver, I own 3 of them and all shoot bug holes with the SAME load to boot!
If I had any ego it would be bruised, but I do not :)
Final update on this, I have built a lot of rifles in my life and this is the first one I simply gave up on. I worked bullets, powders, depths, and brass but nothing would tighten this rifles groups. I pulled the barrel and replaced it with...
I took the rifle apart and noticed the action screws had loosened. I opened up the barrel channel to ensure a true free float with full expansion. I also glassed in the lug tightly with DevCon. I used Blue locktite and torqued the action screws to 50 Inch pounds. I also double checked all scope...
I have a 300 RUM I built on a Savage 110 action awhile back. I have noticed that when I take it to the range the first two shots impact the same point 5 inches above the bullseye (where it was zeroed when the barrel was already warm), then there after all the other rounds punch the X center...
It is impressive your wife shoots a 30 Nosler! My kind of Gal! I have always subscribed to the "bring enough gun" motto. Many of my friends are hunting the Grendel and 22 creedmoor's but that is not for me, not criticizing them, just not what I like hunting with.
I found another rifle in the back of the safe I have not shot or worked up a load for. It is a 6.5x300 Weather Magnum I custom built some time ago, Guess I need to get it to the range also and see what it will do.
