My first rifle as an adult was a 7mm RM. I still have it and hunt with it, it has convincingly killed a number of elk as well as impala, reed buck, hartebeest, roan and zebra. All except one zebra were DRT with 160 A Frames or Nosler PTs. It is a timeless and very successful cartridge design.
I have a 280AI M70 with 24" 1:8-1/2" twist barrel. Have a box of 150 ABLRs. would like to try these out, but before I start burning components and time I thought to inquire here about experiences and suggestions from you all.
I would take the 28 ga O/U with skeet and I/C tubes. Shoot 3/4 oz. of #8 shot. Pay attention at all times - there can be dangerous situations when hunters and dogs get excited or lax.
I have a very early (Don Allen era) LH SA Dakota 76 in 257 Roberts. It has a blind magazine. I struggled with feeding issues. I think the 257R is about the longest round that will fit in the magazine. Sent it to Parkwest earlier this year and they fixed the problem and didn'r charge much as I...
I am a far from excellent pistol shot - don't practice enough. But my Kimber is at least as good as my old Gold Cup that I shot when working with a retired Marine Captain to learn to handle a pistol and it's much lighter to carry than my stubby Colt Officer's Model 1911.
I live in the mountains...
I happen to have a LH Ruger M77 mrk II in my gun room. Owned it for several years and have contemplated what, exactly, I should do with it. It's an '06, so I thought maybe a 6mm Rem or, going the other way, a 35 Whelen. I love my M70s, GM Mauser and my Mathieu, but the M77 mrk II is too good to...
Just recently took delivery of one of my LH Model 70s from Mark Bansner's shop. The barrel is by BRUX, and one piece bottom metal by Sunnyhill. John McLaughlin of Helena did the metal work and Mark Bansner provided the stock and metal finishing. This rifle is a sort of Rubicon for me, as all my...
When you think Cape Buffalo, think big bull elk X 3. These are massive and very tough animals.
I have limited experience with buff, but have spent weeks hunting them and shot three. The deal with buff is penetration, not velocity or accuracy (the average shot is probably 60 yards). You want a...
My Kimber ProTac II was giving me some ejection issues and was very stiff. IIRC, it had a 12 lb. spring... went to a lighter (9 lb.?) spring and problem gone and a little easier to operate. Love my Kimber.
I am getting good results with N560 in my 280AI and 7mm Rem Mag. you might want a slightly slower powder for your .264 WM. VV has a cluster of powders that seem right for over bore cartridges.
For my 375 H&H and 404 Jeffery I have been using N150. These powders give consistent results and are...
Since powders like RL22 have become unobtainium, I have been going more to VV powders, especially N150 and N560. Great consistent powders that are easy to handle and give great results.
I like my 375 H&H and my 7mm Rem Mag. I recently had a 308 Norma Mag built on an M70 LH Classic action with Brux barrel. Bansner stocked it for me and it is due here by UPS tomorrow. This will be my plains game and elk rifle.
Does Norma even sell ammunition in North America? I know a fair amount about shotshells and I think that 90%+ of European shotshell manufacturers use Cheddite hulls, which are straight wall (Riffenhauser) hulls with separate base wads. Not really the best design. It is likely that this is what...
"What is the difference between the Ballistic Tip® and the AccuBond®"
I use both these bullets for different purposes. I find the Ballistic Tip is slightly more accurate and flexible in my rifles, while the Accubond certainly holds together better on impact. The BTip is better for Coues deer...
That's the 25-'06. Details on the Ruger N.1... Jard trigger, McLaughlin barrel hanger, 25" BRUX barrel. Metal and finishing by Pete Mazur, Stocl by Gary Goudy. It's a good shooter.
Unlikely I'll ever sell it
For binos I use my old rubber armored Zeiss 10 X 40s and for spotting my Swarovski 15 X 56s on a tripod.
I use a range of scopes from Leupold VX6i 1 - 6X on. my 404 Jeffery to a Schmidt & Bender 2.5 - 10 X 42 Summit on my 280 AI. My other rifles are fitted with a mix of Swarovski and Leupold...
