Posted this in the reloading thread for the round I was working on but figured this would be a good spot as well.
My grandfather passed away a few years ago and I was given his early 80’s Remington 700 .270 this year. I spent some time dialing the rifle in with various 130gr .270 loads for...
Outside of this thread where I really wanted to develop a 160 load, my buddy used one of my other 270’s that I have a great 130gr Hornady Interlock SP 59gr 4831sc load developed for and this was the stag he got. It was an absolute monster.
The deed is done, the load performed flawlessly as expected. Got a Red Stag at ~100 yards, quartered shot, went in through the lungs and out on the shoulder. What an animal!
I think this is the one. I just went through all of my research and the 35 / 358 don't seem to be any current production calibers I could find. The 45-70 I think checks the box, its a classic round, there no overlap and I can get a beautiful lever gun chambered in it. Reloading the round looks...
I forgot to mention a 30-06, I feel like that would be a very ideal one to round out the classic North American calibers.
I think I’m going to go with one of the bigger lever gun calibers. I like the look for the 35 Rem / .358 Winchester. Something I can utilize right away hunting the heavy...
You guys are masochists! Ive shot a 375 HH once when I was 18ish at a range in Colorado. I don't have a ton of desire to shoot them again. I think I would lean towards 338WM if I was looking at calibers that hot.
Great suggestions and along the thought train that I’ve had. A 300 Win Mag is guaranteed to be in the safe at some point as I will be adventuring west at some point in my life. When I do head that way, I will spend some $$$ on that rifle.
The rifles I’ve been looking at are the Ruger G2...
Looking to get a new rifle shortly and was probably going to target a new caliber. For fun would love some feedback on what you folks would look at to further round out the quiver.
I’ve got a classic caliber selection that I enjoy and has served me well with hunting and range shooting over...
OK I got it today.

Yeah I may have pull some, I had a lot of shooting to do yesterday and I was rushing a touch. I loaded (4) more the 160’s with a COAL 3.330, slightly longer than the original builds.
I also picked up a box of AB 140’s, going to run a string of them with 59gr H4831sc today. Unfortunately they...
Well that didn’t work out as planned. Not unusable by any means but I think I can get better results.

So I went back and looked at my paper from the range session. It actually looks like I didn’t have an errant shot but I double tapped a hole.
Group #2 was the 52.5gr / 160gr Partition load.
Group #6 was the 54.5gr / 160 Partition load.
Was telling a close friend about it tonight and realized...
Thank you all for the replies. I have a few weeks to work this load and see if I can make it work, if not I’ll be highly confident with one of the 130gr loads I’ve had great results with in this rifle!
I have more of a technical question that I would like some opinions on.
This R700 measures...
Sorry let me clarify. Two shots were 1.5" apart the 3rd didn't hit the paper. I reloaded 5 of them today and will run through another test.
If push comes to shove I have lots of other rounds that will work well I can reload. Ive got good grouping with this rifle from 130gr Sierra SBT GK's, and...
Ill try to pick up some of those and get some shots down range before heading out. I'm kind of hoping the 54.5gr end up working out but need to shoot another round of them.
Hi Everyone - This is my first post and I think this 100% the right spot to ask this question!
I've been working up a new load to take on a Red Stag hunt I have coming up in mid October. I wanted to get some opinions on the load as its not a hot charge.
Rifle - 1983 Remington 700 - 270...
