    7 re mag and 150 g bullets

Three bullets with 68 grains of RL-26 proved to be very good. Nosler Accubond Long Range, Swift Scirocco II and Hornady ELD-X each made a half inch group @ 100 yards. Seat the bullets so you have a maximum length to feed from a full magazine. RL-26 is extremely hard to find now, H-1000 is a...

Centerfire rifles to hunt the world

Five centerfire rifles for world-wide hunting (on land). Ammo is not a restriction. Here is my line up. 22-250 Rem - varmint specialist 6.5 Creedmoor - medium plains game 280 Rem - medium / large game 300 Weatherby - larger game 375 H&H - the big stuff

20 cartridges to rule them all

That is a good list. Trading out a similar cartridge of the same caliber can always happen such as in general hunting scenarios a 300 Win will mostly do what a 300 Wby achieves.

What's it cost these days to rebarrel a rifle?

My gunsmith charges $60 to thread a barrel to the receiver and $35 to thread the muzzle. I have a lot of ER Shaw barrels on rifles he built and everything from him is great work. Shaw barrels ri. About $180-200 including shipping.

    Gaps in your caliber battery

From 17 HMR to 500 Smith & Wesson I have the coverage I need. I will not consider having only one hunting rifle chambered in 270 Winchester a shortcoming. The deer and pronghorn where I live have fallen with good shots from rifles as “small” as a 243 WSSM all the way to 300 Weatherby. When you...

Technical question regarding temperature and powders.

One way to offset the possible effects of colder temperatures is to use a temperature insensitive powder. In no particular order I suggest H-4350, H-1000 and RL-16, 23 and 26. Good luck finding those last three. H-1000 works extremely well with my 257 Weatherby. The biggest bodied White tail...

    Federal’s 7mm Backcountry

Since the reloading material isn’t out for this cartridge, I think buying the rifle and ammo puts you at the mercy of the supply chain. Anyone remember the component shortages of 2008 and 2020? A proprietary case to boot you’ve got a sustainment nightmare in the works. Zippy fast velocity from...

    Deer reactions when hit.

I have seen well hit deer fold like a cheap table, but also jump and then plow into the ground. Some have staggered a few steps sideways, stop and fall down. Whether the bullet plows into a shoulder or goes through the heart / lungs, I’ve never seen one remain motionless after the hit...

    6.8 Western?

You’re right. When I read about the so-called string points of the 6.8 Western I thought the 270 WSM a received a faster twist rate and Winchester / Browning are calling it new…….but those rifle makers aren’t even making their respective versions the same. Their twist rates are different!!!! The...

    New from Weatherby model 307

I like the notion of a purpose-built rifle. We have different shoes / boots for various activities (and temperatures) and if you need x a hunting rifle with certain traits, the 307 can be one for you. The 307 isn’t offered in many typical hunting cartridges. That’s fine because the hunters...

    Magnum vs standard rifle primer

Several years ago I tested Fed 210 vs Winchester large rifle primers using exact matches in case weight, bullet weight and charges of the same powder with my 300 Weatherby Magnum. My variable was the barrel temperature since I had no way to accurately measure it. The Winchester primers were...

    Hammer Bullets

Varget with the 166 grain Hammer Hunters in my 308 Win (Bergara B-14 Ridge) had crazy small shot groups My loads were one grain apart and no noticeable dining accuracy so I went with the faster one. These were with the muzzle break. Loads without the brake we’re not as good, so I will keep using...

    308 Winchester Favorite Loads

My M-1A and Bergara Ridge rifles like 44 grains of W-748 with the 168 grain hollow points from Hornady and Sierra. Winchester cases and primers, but HORNADY cases are fine too. I weigh the cases empty (no primers either) and shoot in order from lightest to heaviest.

What is your favor 6.5 creedmore whitetail bullet and load?

Hunting load: 130gn Swift Scirocco over 46.5gn of Superformance. This is lightning death on White tails. Long range plinking: 129gn Hornady SST over 43gn of RL-17. It’s sun MOA a at 300 yards and makes first shot hits on a 20” gong at 1,000 yards. All from the same hunting rifle.

Neck sized vs. full length size brass accuracy decrease??

I have necked sized a variety of cartridges and noticed no difference in accuracy vs identical loads from full length resized cases. As for Nosler v Hornady cases giving differences with accuracy, it seems like a neck tension issue or internal capacity creating different pressure. Either way, I...

    reloading for .222 rem

W-748 and 50-52 grain bullets are a great start for a 222 Rem. Your rifle issues sounds like some this is amiss with either the crowning, maybe the receiver or barrel getting undue pressure, and possibly a worn out barrel. I have a Savage 340 in 222 Rem that is a tack driver, despite having a...

When Did The 308 Win Become Trash?

The 308 Win is neither new nor special in the sense that it catches attention for what it can do. It can do damn near anything a non-magnum can do. Period. As a service rifle it’s great—-M-1As and M-24s. As a plains game rifle it does it very well. It’s not dead. It’s a jewel.

    R26 fouling

I have used RL-26 almost exclusively with my 7mm Weatherby. Even with all copper Swift bullets at max loads, there is very little copper build up in the bore. The anti coppering agent is certainly doing its intended job. The barrel cleans up quickly and easily with Hoppes #9. I soak the bore and...

    R-26

I use RL26 with my 300 Weatherby and 180 grain Bullets. I get 3225fps and that is as close to factory ammo velocity as I know of with a 24" barrel. Of course, accuracy is good because there is no need to brag about fast and crappy sized shot groups.
