That is interesting, and is similar to the impression I have that Hornady seems stiffer to work, and generates a little more velocity than other brass. I find it more difficult to work with, but had a lot of Hornady brass to use, and was a bit surprised at the velocities. I will be using...
I have always gotten excellent accuracy with Varget, R15, and 4064. I've found the CFE to require a bit more experimentation, but when you find the right combo, it can be very accurate. I would caution against pushing the max right off the bat, however. I began using it as I was curious if the...
Just finished testing using 150gr. Partitions in 308 with CFE 223. I have been using this powder extensively since it first appeared, and it has allowed me to increase the velocity in several rounds, although I have found the pressure signs frequently are present before the maximum loads listed...
Thanks Elkman, and an excellent question. I adjusted the scope elevation on the shots between shooting the Partition and the Berger VLD, so that the impact would be enough distance between that the results wouldn't be confusing.
Recently I was practicing some shots sitting at 300 yards, shooting at a fixed 300 yard, 1/2 inch steel plate target. I fired 2 rounds of a 7mm 168gr. Berger bullet, with a velocity of 2990 feet per second. I then fired 2 rounds using a 160gr. Partition, with a velocity of 3150fps. These were...
Agree that the velocity concern is overdone. Most of my elk harvests have been with 150gr. Nosler Partition out of a 270, and I have never lost one animal. At any rate, I chronographed the loads, and assuming my chrono was accurate, I got 2915fps at 71gr., 2951 at 71.5, and 72gr yielded 2962...
Thanks for the note Guy! I hope I have similar good luck. Elk or no elk, it will be great to be with my son who got back from a year in Iraq a couple months ago.
I did not chronograph them today, as I had just a short time to shoot. However, I do plan on chronographing the loads tomorrow. The Ramshot website gives a velocity using a 24in barrel of 2925 with 72.2 grs. My guess is that I am between 2850 and 2900 with the 71gr. I would like to be around...
Just got a new 7mm WSM, built as a lighter weight hunting rifle by Nate Dagley in ND. Just started working up loads for an upcoming elk hunt with my son. After 6 rounds of single shot/clean to break in the barrel tried 3 shots with the 175 Partitions with 71gr. Magnum powder. First shot was off...
Are the powder charges listed for the other Nosler 180 gr. bullets interchangable for the e-tip, or do they need to be modified for the all copper bullet? Thanks
I would second the excellent velocity and accuracy with Magpro and the Nosler 160 Accubond. I have had my best combo of above with 69gr. of Magpro, and the bullets seated 0.010 off the lands. With this load I have been getting groups out to 500yds below 0.4MOA. Velocity is around 3000fps.
