If I may ask, what are your intentions with the 22 Hornet/22 K Hornet?
I'm thinking you would want to use 40gr-50 gr bullets out to 200-250 yds for varmints. I would think the 50 gr BT would make for a dandy coyote gun out to 100-150 yds in semi urban areas because it would be on the quieter side.
Mainly bobcats and coyotes at 30 to 125 yards or so.
I have some of the HSM ammo in 37gr and 42gr calhoon bullets comming as well as the 37gr and 42gr calhoon bullets for reloading. For the plain Hornet the hornady 45gr spire point was high on my list to try. When I order the lowprofile bolt handle, low rings, and single shot carrier for jame Calhoon he thought his 37gr would be better at ankoring them than his 42gr bullets. I am used to moving up in bullet weight as the game gets bigger. Thats is if bullet construction stays the same.
If I made this into a K-Hornet I was going to try the 40gr Vmax and 40gr sierra HP. The latter I thought would behave more like a softpoint at the slower velcity (3000fps MV) than the larger centerfire 22's.
This will be a fun gun to shoot and reload for and cheap as it gets for reloading components.
I thought the K-hornet would give me a soild 200 yard gun and say 150 yards with yotes. What do you think on the K-hornet conversion it looks like 100-250 fps increase depending on bullet and powder choice, is it worth it?
I also forgot the twist rate for the 527 in the hornet, is it 1-14?
I have just about shot out the barrel of my hornet. I have had it since I was 14 yrs old. (20 yrs ago-how time flys)it is an H&R model 157 w mannilcher stock. It is the rifle I carry while running a trapline(22 revoler W/ shorts to dispatch caught critters)if I cross paths with any critters. I did take 2 does with head shots when I was in junior high. it did the job.
It loves the old nosler 45 grn nosler bullet that is no longer produced, and Hornady 45 grn hp bee bullet, and speer 33 grn tnt. I have been loading the 33 grn bullet w/ 12 grns of lilgun and it works nicely on ground squirrels. anyone know where I can get a replacement barrel, I have easly put 10,000 +rounds through this gun and I bought it used at a gun show so who knows how many rounds have been throw it.
