243 100 gr partition with H4895

My nephew is getting a 243 and buying factory ammo for him is not really an option. My brother bought the components to reload for him. Does anyone have any experience loading a 100 gr bullet in a 243 with H4895? From the recommended loads I am seeing a max powder charge of 33 gr of H4895. Thoughts / experiences on the aforementioned info??

H4895 is a good powder for reduced loads . if you're trying to get max velocity , this isn't the powder . at max load the case fill % is lower than I like . this isn't saying it's not able to be accurate , all you can do is start developing a load



33.0 gr should be about a starting load with a 100 gr Partition

Never used H4895 in the 243 but the 100 gr Nosler PT is best bullet I ever used in that caliber. Penetration, internal damage and good size exit wounds. Dan.

Good bullet but IMR4350 or H4350 would be a better powder to try in the 243 with the 100 gr. Partition. Just a well balanced powder both of them for the 243. You should be able to find something that really works well with either one. Might mention that if it just doesn't seem to shoot the 100 gr. Partition, you might try the 95 gr. Partition.

My 243 likes IMR 4350 and RL26, I’ve had good luck with 4831 too, but it was no better in our gun than 4350.

I didn’t like interlocks i. 243. Lost several deer. One was knocked to the ground, got up and ran away without a blood trail.

I like the Partition idea. I’m guessing the interlock hit a shoulder and broke on the bone....Accubonds and ballistic tips should be fine too.

your choice of H4895 could be accurate , but I like velocity . when I loaded 100 gr partitions in my sons 243 I used IMR7828 it was to bulky to easily fit , but shot well . now you can buy IMR7828sc this will fit in that case . it should give about 150 FPS more velocity then H4895 . with todays powders I'd be looking at RL26 , N560 , IMR7828ssc , RL22 , RL17,RL23,RL19,RL16 just to name a few .

I haven't loaded for the .243 in years. Back around 1977 to 1979 I ran the 100 gr. Hornady SP over either H4350 or H4831, I really don't remember which. I used the rifle for coyotes. I did let some of the neighbor's kids use the rifle for their first deer hunts, and four 11 and 12 year olds took their first deer with that rifle. Shortly before moving from Nevada to Arizona I gave that rifle to the son of one of my friends.
Currently I have two rifles in .243, a Ruger #1A and a post 64, pre68 M70 I bought off my son in law as they were moving to Boston on a job transfer and he was afraid of MA's unAmerican gun laws. Frankly speaking I really haven't done anything with either rifle. My bad I suppose.

I have used 4895 along with 3031 & 4064 in 243 with good accuracy, but only with 70 to 85 gr bullets. This was before owning a chronograph so speeds are unknown. It may shoot very well with 100 grainers as long as you aren't after top velocity.

FWIW... With 100 gr bullets, Hodgdon #25 lists 33.5 as a start charge at 2734fps & 36 as max at 2938fps. #26 is 33gr @2691 to 36gr @2934, & #27 says 31gr @2683 to 33gr @2818 with 50,100 CUP which seems a tad anemic for a modern bolt gun.

Lyman #s 45 & 46 lists IMR4895 as an accuracy powder with 70 & 75 gr. bullets.

I knew that H4895 would probably be better with lower weight bullets in the 243 just trying to find something that may shoot well. I have some IMR4451 and H4350 that I may try for my nephew.

My Ruger M77 Varminter shoots ragged holes with 87 vmax and 37.0 of Varget. It also shoots pretty well with RL17 and 85 grain speer PSP. Give it a try, you may be surprised. H4350 should work well also.
