I shot my son's 243 also, and seemed to do okay with RL19. Maybe not the perfect powder, but it is decent' enough. Trigger needs a little lightening, but overall, I found a decent deer load I think.

42gr (2790-2750-2789) (the boy shot this group over the chrono) Did a good job for a 13 Y/O I'd say

44gr (2930, 2931, 2920) An actual target wasn't shot on this one. I couldn't keep the boy off the rifle, so I let him shoot steel with it. I will get it done next time out, but I am betting with an ES like that, it should be fine.

I have some IMR4350 I will try later. For right now, the 243 has a proper deer load to work with. Scotty

Don't be a fool and deer hunt with the .243...

A guy I know shot a deer, found the deer, thought it was dead. Turned around to fill out his tag, turn back around, and the deer was gone. Tried to track it, and couldn't. Been hunting deer with this cal. for over 25 years. Killed all his deer with this cal. Seasoned hunter.

Really? Are you joking? I would say 1 incident in 25 years is pretty good actually. I like the 243.

You couldn't tell this young man about how ineffective the 243 is! Scotty

close range.. big deal. I know another guy who's son shot a deer under 100 yards and the bullet didn't even make it out the hide. Great varmint cartridge. Deer? I wouldn't chance shoot deer with it. Keep it under a hundred.

Betcha you wouldn't say that if it had a big rack, now would ya?

I would shoot just about any deer that walks with a 243 and 95gr BT out to 300 yards. Shot a ton of 243's and hunted with them alot. I have never seen the 243 lacking with proper bullets. Bad shots with Varmint bullets will wreck any hunters day. Again, this is just my opinion of the round. It is a very capable performer. Scotty

I notice you aren't considerng what I said( Betcha you wouldn't say that if it had a big rack, now would ya) just what you think. But that's ok. Shoot away.

Beretzs,
Looks like a promising load. IMR4350 would be great. I love the 243 and thinks its a great caliber. Have taken deer, antelope and a few wild pigs with mine. Never lost an animal yet. A well placed shot is more important IMO.

I have some 4350, so I may give that a try as well. Scotty

A well placed shot

is what the .243 is all about.

Did you have a bad experience with the 243 or 6mm Boolit? Just wondering what bullet failed on you? Always good to hear about the failures too. Nothing but knowledge to be gained from it all. Scotty

If a .243 isn't well placed, then you are taking a gamble. And I don't think I really need to get into terminal ballistics do I?

Deer are easy to kill if you hit them right, regardless of the cartridge. It comes down to the bullet more so than the cartridge. The Nosler PT is a proven performer. The 6mm 100 gr PT is more than enough bullet IF you put it where it needs to go.

Scotty,

I always had great accuracy with IMR 4350 and both 95 gr and 100 gr bullets in the 243 Win. RL 19 looks to be decent too, good speed.
The 100 gr PT will do the trick for your son.

Uh oh, a big time moderator..... you just contradicted yourself.

So EVEN with the PROVEN PERFORMER, the bullet needs to go where it needs to be put.

Well yeah man? What bullet works correctly/perfectly when it isn't placed well?

Just for reference, that young feller made a bad shot on the deer pictured. It was a texas heart shot, directly into the left ham, that little bullet penetrated far enough to get into the guts and liver and kill that deer DEAD in about 250 yards.

That was a little old 243, shooting 95gr BT's at 2850 outta the muzzle. The deer was shot in Upstate NY and weighed about 145LBS or so. I don't know what rifle could have done much better. It was a horrible shot, but apparently the cartridge and bullet were able to do it in. I am not sure what your hang up is? Like I said, if you have shot deer with the 243, please tell us about all of the failures. I just haven't seen them. Most of my NY family has hunted with a 243 and 100gr Core Lokt's for as long as I have been alive and they SLUMP deer. Can't remember tracking too awful many either to be honest. I have assisted in tracking more butt/gut shot deer with a 30-06 and 270. Just wondering what your experience with the cartridge is. We like to hear about the failures of given bullets and cartridges, as much as successes. Scotty

My hunt last year with my .270... uphill through the rib cage.... through the spine. At 300 yards.

Great shooting buddy! Sounds like a great shot to me.

What about with the 243? Scotty
