Went out shooting this morning with my 25-06 rem 700, 24" shilen bbl light varmint contour, leupold vx2, 6-18x40 AO fine duplex w/target knobs, leupold base/rings. Factory trigger set to 1.75# by yours truly.

Shooting was done at 100 yards, off a wooden bench and a leadsled for the rifle rest.

Using Hornady 75g VMAX and IMR-4831, Rem cases, Fed 210's, 3.215". Later measured to the lands with this bullet is about 3.243"

I loaded 3 rounds each at 54, 55, and 56g.

Here is the result

I'm thinking I'm gonna play with the 56g load and change the OAL to 3.235"-3.240" to where its only about .003"-.008" off the lands.

What do you guys think??

Ought to get it done.

What's that total weight of your rifle? Looks like it will be an outstanding 'yote wacker.

Remmy,

Nice. How does that 75 gr V-Max work on song dogs? I'm sure it will all but cut 'em in half up close, what about 300+ yds?

JD338

I have used them on varmints from the 25-06. They work great.

Remmy,

That's smokin ! Awesome yote round.... have you made contact with any ? I'm curious like JD.....I've shot 3 yotes with 95gr V-max's out of the .260 with various results.... the first two bang flop game over with no exit holes. Both yotes around 150yrds or so I'd guess. The 3rd as JD mentioned about cut him in half.....

Remmy,
I know you've been around quite a while and I've read a lot of your informative posts on this and other forums. I know a lot of your previous shooting has been with the heavier bullets. What is the twist on that barrel?I'm thinking you REALLY do want to know what we think. So here goes:

I think you have a beautiful rifle that ought to be shooting tighter groups than that. It looks like you've got some 10 o'clock to 4 o'clock stringing, or maybe a flier going on. How much time between shots? In the groups, did the tight shots come first, last, or was the 'group spreader' the middle shot? The bottom right bullet in the first two targets looks like a flier.

I tried seating those bullets out also, but they were already shooting well and it made no difference. I'm curious how this works out for ya as a fellow 25-06 fan.
I'll look up my loads for that bullet today and get back to you.

I'm with elkeater2, I'd bet the gun shoots better than that. I've had good luck with H4831 and both 87 and 100 ballistic tips.....

Remmy,

What about primers ?? Have you tried anything else? I know there isn't a big following for the CCI-BR primers but that is all I shoot short of needing Magnum primers then I use the Federals. I have seen some pretty good improvements just in that.....

The best results I obtained were with the 75 v max and AA4350

Good point Powerstroke.
Due to lack of availability of the GM210M, and the fact that I ran out, I tried some CCI BR2 primers in my 22-250. The proven load with q 50 gr BT went from .5's to .3's" Its the primer of choice for me now in my 22-250.
Might be worth a try Remmy.

Not to sure of the total weight, but I bet its about 11.5 lbs the way you see it with bipod/sling/shells. Its kinda heavy...

The 75g vmax definately gets the job done on the yotes. Not my bullet of choice for LR reasons, but it does shoot fast and flat and definately gets the job done to as far as you should be shooting at most of them. I've shot a few with them from about 100-300 yards and most dont exit, when they do though its a pretty good size hole. All results have been the same though and thats a very dead dog. I just dont like using them all that much because there so fast (barrel burners) and there is better bullets for shooting past 300-400 yards for windage reasons. I like the 85g nbt the best, but they are hard to find around here.

Yesterday was 28 degrees so I was shooting about 1 shot every minute, and about 5 minutes between loads. Barrel was not even warm. Dont think it was ME with the flyers, the flyers are the 3rd shots. Twist is 1-10"

I have always used Fed 210's or CCI 200's, but I cant find anymore Fed's and I"m on my last of them. Locally they carry CCI and WIn, but its getting harder and harder to find them as well. I use to buy the CCI BR-2's, but I"m not paying $4.50 for 100 primers. I know primers play a very big part in accuracy sometimes. For instance at 400 yards with my 115g VLD's. My groups were cut in half by going with a CCI primer vs a Fed primer, so you just never know.

I'm just going to extend the OAL and see what that does, and see if I can get any Winchester large rifle, or mag rifle and see what a simple primer swap does. Not gonna get to in depth for a load as I'm not planning on sticking with these bullets anyways. Just wanting to shoot them up to get rid of them. I at least like to strive for 3/4" though...

This rifle seems to have a very fast barrel. It tends to run 200-250fps faster then book. For example, 54g of IMR-4831 with 100g NBT's gives me 3550fps. Thats a max load in that rifle for sure. I use 49g that gives me 3350fps. With 75g vmax, I had some left over from my winchester that had 59g of IMR-4831 in them and they were clocking right at 4K!! So pretty much I have to start at the lowest and that will be giving me the max velocity. Its the first rifle I've ever had like this. Has to be the way the chamber was cut, and since I"m not the original owner I have no idea.

Remmy,
I said I'd get back to you. My final load was the max right off the Hodgdon website - 55 gr. H414, WLR primers, Winchester brass. I remember playing with COL some, but the Hodgdon site data called for a COL of only 3.10". I thought that was a little strange, but tried it and got better accuracy by a little. They went from about 7/8 or 3/4" groups to 3/4" or slightly better all the time. Never played with primers. These 75 grainers leave enough copper behind to make me see an accuracy difference after about 20 - 25 shots.

I never tried any IMR 4831 with the lighter bullets. I understand now you're using 'em up, and not looking for a development project!

Things are the same here in the big city. Trying to find CCI standard small rifle primers is a joke. I found 2 boxes in a Joes, but none of the others have any. Same with Sportsmans, Fisherman's Marine, and all the BiMart's I've been in. I have a bunch of .223 (825 or thereabouts) I want to load for the upcoming varmint/coyote season. I can find a few 40 and 50 gr. Ballistic Tips, but no 55s. No V-Maxs, no BlitzKings. Thanks, Obama.
