Any of you guys have experience with 110gr Accubonds in .257 Roberts? Any powders or OAL you can recommend? I plan on running them out of a A Bolt with a 20" barrel. Just getting started and would like to hear some thoughts from you veterans. Do you think 115gr Partitions are any better?

Welcome to the forum!

The 257 Roberts is a cool round.
I have a M700 Classic long action in the 257 Bob so I can seat bullets out to a COL of 2.965". This allows for extra powder case capacity.

I am loading 48.0 grs RL 22 with the 110 gr AB in a R-P case and Federal GM210M primer. MV is 2974 fps.

For the 115 gr PT, I am loading 43.0 grs IMR 4350.

These loads are safe in my rifle . You will need to start low and work up.

Welcome!

The 257 Bob is a nicely balanced round. JD338 is on that round!

John,

As has already been stated, the 257 Bob is a great cartridge. I'm shooting mine in a CDL Special Edition. I've used RL19, but I believe JD338 is correct that RL22 is a better propellant yet.

My 110 AccuBond load is 49.00 gr of reloder 22 for a muzzle velocity of 3050 fps from a 700 classic. I have been using Federal 210 primer Remington (nickel) case. I have found that Reloder 22 is by far the best powder for the Bob and 110-120 gr bullets.

I hope to get comparable velocities outta my Bob with the 110NAB. Need to find me some Alliant powders. Heck I'd be hapy with 2850fps. Can't wait to start working up heavier bullet loads with this gun.

I'm shooting 45.0gr RL22 under a 110gr AB and getting great accuracy. The two deer I shot with the load were processed by others, but what I saw left me wanting for nothing in the wound channels created.

I will play this winter and spring with stuffing more powder in the cases and seeing what I can get for velocity before pressure starts to rear its ugly head. I haven't chrono'ed my load. I know it's not a screamer, but it's done in the deer it took quite thoroughly!

TD, At 49 grs I am showing no pressure signs, I just can't get any more in the case and seat the bullet.

I Just found some Re-22 at the store which said they would only order 8lb jugs minimum. 8) I guess they relented and now have 10 lbs in stock. They did get me for $29/lb tho.

I have 115gr BTs and PTs I'm going to try first. I can only get 2.875" max OAL out of my M70 Fwt. If the BTs work I can assume I can do something with the ABs. The BTs are .012" longer than the ABs.

Looking forward to seeing your results. I think the Featherweight 257 or the Sporter 25-06 will fill the M70 .257 gap I have.

Try $44 a pound. Transportation up north drives the price up substantially.

Thanks! I feel slightly better now.

Hopefully they will be better than my early results. I'm still struggling to get a good yote load. I'm thinking about working on JD338's recommendation to try the 100gr BTs.

Surprised you're not thinking 25WSSM! One of my buds just bought a 25-06 and he just ordered all the goods to start reloading. I haven't reloaded for this cartridge in awhile but always felt that it had a lot more top end performance than many think. I'm looking forward to it as this will be another OJT for a future reloader. I always learn something whenever I help a new reloader.

CatskillCrawler,

Just for you buddy........

Coyote shot at approx 75 yds with a 100 gr BT from the 257 Roberts.

Nice! We're finally getting some snow this weekend and have Sat and Sun hunt plans. So far, all my sets this season have been barren. :x prolly taking the shottie tho as we'll be in the laurel and shots are usually under 50 yds. We've been seeing alot of cat tracks too and would hate to tear up a bobcat with the 22-250.

Good luck this weekend.

The coyote pictured above shows the exit from the 100 gr BT.

Shotgun is easier on a cat pelt.

JD,
Gotta love the spray pattern on the snow! I don't have to be a member of CSI to figure that one out!

A buddy and I bought consecutive Ruger No. 1 As in .257 Roberts a week ago and I'm really looking forward to shooting mine. The 110 AB is pretty accurate in my No. 1B 25/06, .528" at 200 yards.

I picked up some of the 115 grain BT already loaded off the promo, so I've gotta shoot that before I do any handloading. If my previous experience with Nosler 7/08 load (140 AB .621" @ 100 yards) is any indication, I'll be pretty happy with that.

Now that's a rifle with class. 8) A few years back I found a Ruger #1B in .257 Robt. and it came with 5 boxes of Norma 100 gr. ammo. This was all factory new, not reloads. There was a 3x9 Leupold on the gun and the guy said it was sighted in. I took it to the ranges, set up one of my targets 1t 100 yards and proceeded to shoot a group of 5. It was hot (105 in the shade) at the range so I spaced the shots out at 2 minutes apart. That Ruger #1 put all five shots into a half inch. I have noticed that the Ruger #1's I have that are small bore, (.25 caliber or less) have all been quite good shooters when it comes to accuracy. I'm thinking yours should do quite well.

Yea, I hope so. He shot his already with some 100 grain Sierras and was very happy, sub 1" groups. The weather turned to poo right after we got them and only had a day to shoot them, I had to go to work so I couldn't. I put an older VariX II 3-9x40 on mine and I think it'll be a good combination.

My Roberts is a long action Ruger M77 with a long throat. I don’t have the COL handy but my TTSX and AccuBond loads won’t fit the magazine on my short-action M700 .308Win.

My recipe includes:
Winchester +P brass
CCI 200

Haven’t tried Hybrid 100V in the Roberts but it gives great velocities according to Hodgdon.

My favorite loads:
75g V-MAX/H4895 for varmints
100g TTSX/H4350 for antelope and deer
110g AccuBond/H4350 for antelope and deer
120g A-Frame/H4831SC during combined elk/deer season

My Roberts quickly became my favorite rifle – hope you enjoy yours as much!
