Guys looking for any load infor on the 130 E Tip in a 270 WSM I got a box on order to try. Having a bit of trouble getting the ABs to shoot how I want, and I think it is because I can't get them close enough to the lands. Did have one load of 64.5 gr. 7828 ssc go an inch and a half at 200 yards this morning. Going to keep playing with that one till me E Tips get here. Just looking for some starting places that have worked for others.

I have Magpro, 7828 ssc, IMR 4350, and am thinking of picking up some RL 22. Goal would be to get something over 3350, but I'll take what ever she gives me.

Also looking for some info on a 338 WM with the 200 gr ET, JD and you guys finaly talked me into trying them. More than likely going to start with RL 19 on this one unless somebody has a great load worked up.

Both rifles have 26" tubes if it matters.

Jmad: Here's something you might consider trying with the e-tips. It's plagerized from the Berger Bullets site. I havent' tried this yet, but I plan to when my shipment of VLD's arrives later this week. In addition, I have some NCC's that won't shoot in my competition .308, so I plan to try this with them as well....

Load 24 rounds at the following COAL if you are a hunter (pulling a bullet out of the case with your rifling while in the field can be a hunt ending event which must be avoided) or a competition shooter who worries about pulling a bullet during a match:
1. .010 off the lands (jump) 6 rounds
2. .050 off the lands (jump) 6 rounds
3. .090 off the lands (jump) 6 rounds
4. .130 off the lands (jump) 6 rounds

Shoot 2 (separate) 3 shot groups in fair conditions to see how they group. The remarkable reality of this test is that one of these 4 COALs will outperform the other three by a considerable margin. Once you know which one of these 4 COAL shoots best then you can tweak the COAL +/- .002 or .005. Taking the time to set this test up will pay off when you find that your rifle is capable of shooting the VLD bullets very well (even at 100 yards).

PS: 4350 (either one), H4831 and RL19 are good starting powders for 200gr bullets in the 338.

Jmad_81,

On a previous thread, I wrote:
I have a 270 WSM in one of the new Featherweights. My experience with the WSMs is that the 270 is the most finicky of the lot. Nevertheless, I have an excellent load consisting of 130 grain E-Tip, 59.5 grains of RL17 and WLR primers. It gives me 3250 fps and excellent accuracy.

Perhaps you can get more velocity, but I am quite pleased with this velocity in light of the accuracy I am getting.

Consequently, I did get fair velocity and good accuracy with 130 grain ABs and WLRM primers and 63 grains of IMR4350. I also had a screaming load with 130 grain Sciroccos and WLRM primers with 67.5 grains of RL19.

AS I'm limited to a COAL of 2.840" in my WSM due to the mag box. So I might try that and then work down from there. I can't remember off the top of my head but I think that a 2.840" with the 140 AB gives me .060" off the lands.

Dr. Mike I read that thread, that is a very impressive group and if I can't get them to shoot with the powders I have I might have to try some RL 17, that kind of accuracy makes up for a lot of speed in my mind, but at the same time I don't need a benchrest hunting rifle. If I can't get three under 1.5" or less at 200 yards I won't shoot it regardless of how fast it is. But my goal of 3350 or better and 1.5" or less at 200 yards whould be atainable. How far off the lands were you loading them?

Man, that seems kind of short. I am able to load my 270WSM to 2.875 in my M70. I am not sure how far off the lands it is, but it shoots pretty well. Like around 1.5 at 200. What rifle are you shooting Jmad? Good luck, I am using HDY Interbond 130's and Magpro and everything seems to be pretty good, including the velocity (right at 3325 or so). Scotty

Jmad,

I am loading 0.100 inches off the lands, which is rapidly becoming my standard for all monolithics. I used to load to 0.050 inches off the lands, but I find that the longer jump to the lands affords better accuracy still.

Scotty,

The M70 has a deeper magazine than many factory rifles. Magazine is quite limiting in Remington and Browning, in particular. And though you can gain a few thousandths by dressing the magazine well, you won't gain much.

Roger, got it, I was just wondering. I know all of my M70's have a long magazine, and my Rugers seem a little short. Either way, I know the Barnes shoot pretty decent if they are pushed back at least .050 off the lands. My 35 Whelen is an easy 1" or under gun with the 225gr TSX's. Scotty

I'm shooting a Rem 700 CDL. I was a bit dissapointed when I found out how short the box was. I think after this deer season I'm going to have it sent to a smith and see if I can get it lengthend a bit and get it rechambered so that I can reach the lands. That way I can adjust my COAL out as my rifleing wears.

Got a bunch of brass ready, hoping to get a few of the promising test loads reloaded tonight and then just waiting for the ETs to get here! I'll keep ya posted.

I have developed loads for the 300 WSM in a number of Remington rifles (as well as Browning, Sako and custom guns built on Borden actions) over the past several years. I have found them all to be wonderfully accurate without cutting a thread on the barrel or hogging out the magazine. See if you can work up a load first. The long jump to the lands has not degraded accuracy so far as I am able to tell.

Well I finally got my 130 ETs in. Went and did some shooting last night with some mag pro. The three loads were kind of all over except for 70 gr. two cut each other and the third was off in left field. these were loaded .0055 off the lands. I got home and loaded up six more at 70 gr, three at .0075 off, and three at .0100 off. Went to the range this morning ant thried the .0075 off load. To my suprise I ended up with three in a 1/4"!!!!!!!! Made my day for sure, even with a flat tire on my pick up. the load that was seated .0100 off opened up to about 2".

The sun was nt up far enough for the chrono to work but sast night I was getting 3350 with 69.5 gr. and 3315 with 69 gr. so I'm thinking that these are going to be going around 3375 or more. I'll get some more loaded up and try them through the chrono and 200 yards when I get a chance. My chrono is busted so I have to use Remingtonmans when he come out to the range so it could be a while, but I'll keep everybody posted.

I'll get a pic up today some time as well.

jamd_81,

That'll do! Congratulations. I would think that the load you developed will work very well indeed for about anything you may wish to hunt with that cartridge. Again, it does please us when the planets align and everything comes together. Congratulations.

That's great. MagPro works really well in my 270wsm. I think I am shooting 72gr under a 130 HDY Interbond. Very consistent and fast. Scotty

Here are the pics from this morning.

This pic shows the same load but seated at 2.795". this is .0100" off the lands in this rifle.

Here is the rifle, Had it for a month now and just got done with harvest so got time to share now. Shot pretty good out of the box, but I got boared one night and bedded it.

Nice shooting! Looks like you found a good load.
The E-Tips seem to like a lot of jump. Quite a few have found .100" off the lands gives good accuracy.

Few things quite as satisfying as tiny groups from a fine rifle. Congratulations. The pictures really make the post come alive.

Yep, nice shooting there Jake.

You'll have to try her out at 200 and see how she holds up. I should be out in the morning, so hopefully you can get some readings this time around.

Welll I had one of the best mornings I have had in a long time with shooting that group yesterday to one of the worst this morning. I shot that same load at 200 yards today and it was eight inches with six shots :x This is not the first load that has done this to me I have a load with 130 ABs that did it to me as well. shot half inch at 100 and all over at 200.

I bumped up a half grain and shot three with the same COAL and it was 2" at 200. So I'm going to play arounf with that tonight and tomorrow morning and see what happens.

Anybody got any ideas as to what will cause great groups at 100 and really, really bad ones at 200 with the same load?
