whats your thoughts on the WIN.270wsm.??? looks like i have one coming my way and i dont know a thing about the WSM  im asuming it means,, winchester short magnum ,, i do know its a fairly new cartrage,, what is this caliber capable of?? is it mainly a deer getter or can it take bigger game ?? i use my 30/06 for just about everything and it has always done its job  i guess im just trying to fill my safe while i can still can

you can use it like a 7mag as with the heavier bullets it can nearly match its performance but can be loaded fast and flat with 110s up to around 3600 fps

I have had mine for 3 years and its got 3 bucks and a bull elk

only reason I am selling mine is I want something new to play with

plus I think it is a real pussycat to shoot you should enjoy it hopefully your 30.06 isn't the jealous type

It is a very versatile cartridge. I shoot 140 accubonds for deer. 150 partitions for Elk. My girlfriend shoots 110 Barnes TTSX in hers and it does a great job on deer. 90gr Sierra HP is great on coyote and groundhogs.

I've had a 270WSM since 2002. I use it for deer, elk, hogs and .........
I have loaded the 160PT initially, but have since switched to mainly the 140AB. Other than the larger bears in Alaska, I wouldn't hesitate to use this on any big game animal in the lower 48.

You should like the 270 Winchester Short Magnum. I have one that I like very much.

I have quite a few rifles and probably would not have bought a 270 WSM, but I won one in a raffle at a dinner a few years back. It is a Winchester Model 70, one of the last to come out before the old plant closed. It has become one of my favorite rifles. It handles very nicely, feeds fine, is accuate, and has (in my opinion) VERY low recoil for the performance level it provides.

My favorite load for this rifle uses a 140 grain Nosler Partition at 3200 fps.
With this load I have shot coyotes, deer, black bear, and wild hogs. Performance has always been very good on all animals.

Unfortunately, I live in Central California, so I have to shoot "no-lead" bullets to hunt in this area. I tried the 130 Barnes TSX in this rifle but groups were lousy compared to the 140 Partitions. On a lark I tried the 110 grain Tipped TSX bullets and got great accuracy and 3600 fps! I have only shot coyotes with them so far, but it drops them on the spot.
I run into a guy at the range every so often that has shot deer and wild hogs with the 110 TSSX and he is very pleased with how they work.

Enjoy the new gun.

I have recently fallen in love with the 270 WSM for the second time. The first one I had was a winchester blck shadow (wal-mart $389) and it shot ok in the mid range of the loads. I sold it a while back and bought a Rem 700 CDL in a 270 WSM and took the time to break it in right and I'm loving it. I'm getting 1.5" groups at 200 with 70 gr. of Magpro and 140 NABs, and have not done anything to the gun other than lightened up the trigger a half pound or so.

You will love the 270 WSM. Shoots like a seven mag and has very managable recoil. I'm shotting for 3200-3275 with the 140 AB. With a six inch kill zone that gives you a point blank range of about 325 yards! figure not being over three inches high or low all the way out to there...thats pretty flat for a light weight big game rifle.

I am using the 140 AB for everything, yotes, elk, black bears, deer, and speed goats if I can ever draw . If they had a 150 AB I would switch to those in a heart beat.

FWIW, I have developed loads for my 270WSM using 90HP, 130ET, 140AB 150PT Gold, 160PT and all have shot sub-moa from my Win Mod 70 Super Shadow. Although it was a $398 Winchester packaged rifle/scope combo from Wal-Mart, this rifle seems to be a very accurate with anything I want to shoot from it.

Whats not to like. It's a 270 on vitamins. I have a Sako 75 Finnlight in a 270WSM. With 130gn I've shot deer from 30yds to 500yds. With 150gn PT I've shot a few Elk. It is my "GOTO" gun even though it's not what I carry the most. I've found it to be pretty forgiving on reloads. Shoots 1" + or - all day long if you don't heat it (barrrel) up to bad.
I'm trying RL-17 w/130 BT tomorrow and will see how it likes that load.

Looks like I'll be loading 130 grain E-Tips in my 270 WSM for this fall. 3250 fps and 0.4 inch groups. I won't hesitate to take it afield for most of the game I'll be hunting.

the 270 wsm should be here in a week  ,, im pretty excited to take it out,, im gonna use factory ammo for the time being for break in, but i will be getting dies and componets soon,, whats your break-in procedures??? ive never owned a new un shot rifle  ,, except my rem 870's in 12guage and my encore in 50cal

More than anything, avoid shooting it so much that it gets hot. Give it time to cool between shots. My personal procedure is to clean after every shot for the first ten shots. Then, for 20 or so rounds, I clean after every three shots, giving the rifle ample time to cool between shots. After that, common sense applies. Don't bang off the shots as fast as you can for the afternoon, and keep the rifle clean. I'm probably overly fussy, but really, as long as you don't permit carbon and/or copper to build up in the barrel, you should have no problem. Certainly, before putting away your rifle for the season, it is a good idea to clean it.

The 270 WSM is a great caliber, I have taken rabits, coyote, deer and big hogs with the 130 accubonds, I swear that bullet never drops, it shoots really flat. It seems to be easy to load for also, I never had to search for a powder that it like, just dropped 4350 in the case and it always shoot 1" or better with B tips or accubonds, 130 or 140 grain, 7828 shoots just as good also.
