Ah, spent a couple of nice hours at the range earlier today. One of the rifles I took was the old faithful "Green Machine" as it's been dubbed by my friends and shooting companions, a .308 Win on a short action Remington with a Krieger barrel & McMillan stock. Nice rifle that's been with me for a number of years and a couple of barrels.
Today I was shooting handloads, sending the 155 gr Nosler Competition bullet downrange & burning a charge of 46.5 grains of Varget. I've used this combination for several years in competition, and it has proven quite accurate. Today was no exception. The squirrel target shows the first three shots, from prone with a bipod at 100 yards.
Later, I pulled the bipod, rigged up the sling, added 4 MOA elevation, and did some shooting at 300 yards. The first two shots took out the two clay pigeons. After that I put a three-shot group into a paper plate, sling support only, that measured a whopping 3/4" center to center. I can live with that! It's funny, I typically shoot much better at 300 - 600 yards than I do at 100 or 200 yards - maybe I just try harder? Maybe my head is more in the game at longer ranges? Beats me - but today my 100 yard group and that 300 yard group were almost the same size.
There's a couple photos of the range, the NCW gun club. The black dot on the hillside is the hanging steel gong at 466 yards. The gong itself is hanging inside several old tires, which eliminate the possibility of a ricochet from the steel. I whacked that gong quite a few times today too.
Nosler builds a fine competition bullet - and I'm glad to say I've got quite a stockpile of 'em in 155 and 168 grain versions.
