hi, i am new to the forum and need some help. I am loading some 165gr nosler ballistic tips for my 30-06 and was looking for some load info. i checked thiet website and they have the powder i wanted to use. i have not found a local store that has a nosler manual.

i am wanting to load some 165gr over imr4350. i am needing some info on min load, maxload, o.a.l., what primers and does anyone have an accuracy recipe with this combo i can use as a reference?

any help will be greatly appreciated. :p

58.5-58.8 grs. IMR-4350 with a 165gr bullet. Primer WLR or 210M. 10-15 thousants off the lands. I have had that combo work in a number of 30/06s. Work up to these.Rick.

In the 5th edition Nosler manual for 165gr bullets it shows starting load for IMR 4350 at 53grs and top load of 57grs.I've shot many 06s using 56-57grs using different 165gr bullets and that is one of the most accurate overall loads in the 06.I seat .010-.020 off the lands, you can try groups at different oals to find what is best in youre rifle.

try using a couple of other powders such as 4064 or 4895. 4350 is a bit slow for the 165 grain bullet and you can get the same velocity with 4064 using 9-10 grains less powder. As far as going 1-2 grains past max, there is no need to. All it does is shorten the life of the brass, expand primer pockets, increase headspace over a period of time and possibly injure the shooter or worse yet the person sitting next to you.

bigrifleman, 58.5-58.8 is not over max for that case. Please check psi or cup for that. A 30/06 case will withstand just as much pressure as a 270 case and the 270 case is loaded to higher pressure. I have some Norma brass that have been loaded 10 times with above load, no problems. I have used above load in more than ten 30/06s. IMR-4350 is not too slow for that bullet, it happens to be a great match of case capacity to bullet weight to bore size.rick.

In my 30-06

IMR 4350 @ 57.5
165 BT or AB ( AB for less meat destruction) Accuracy the same
Fed 210M
FC Nickle Brass or WW

56.0 with 180gr AB or BT

COL: 3.340"

Rick, when you can use 8-9 grains less powder (4064) and get the same velocity as another powder (4350) the 4350 is a slower powder. The bullet weight vs caliber is the key.

big rifle man, I realize 4064 is faster than 4350, not the issue here. I use what shoots best in my rifles. I have used 4064 with 150gr bullets in an 06 but have found in numerous 06s that I get much better results with 165gr bullets using IMR-4350. IMR-4350 is definitely not too slow for the 30/06 and is probably one of the most recommended powders for it. I have found 4064 not to be nearly as consistant with 165gr bullets in the 30/06s. I am not concerned about using "8-9" less powder. I buy my more frequently used powders in eight pound containers. Easily burn 10-15 pounds of IMR-4350 a year in various rifles. If you burn 4064 in your 06 and are satisified with it's performance, all is well for you. Mine do quite well with 4350.Rick.

Cart. perform best best @ % high load capacity.... less room in the case............You can use faster powders to achieve the same vel......but accuracy will suffer.......the mid burners will all perform in the 06......Varget, RL 15, 4064/4895........ but for best results the IMR 4350/Reloader 19 is hard to beat.....

I like Reloader 19............but I use IMR 4350 in my 3 main hunting rifles..........30-06/300 Win/338 Win.......makes life simple!

big rifle man, just checked four current manuals, Hornady, Nosler, Sierra all fifth editions and Speer 13th edition. IMR-4064 maxes out pressure wise about 100fps before IMR-4350 reaches max. Average of 7.1 more grains of the 4350 which gives almost 100fps more across the board. To get that extra 100fps with 4064, you would be well into the RED zone. To each his own but I am staying with IMR-4350 for 165gr bullets.Rick.

I've always had my best results with the .30-06 by using fairly slow burning powders: IMR 4350, H 4350, Reloader 22 and H 4831. Generallyl shoot 165 or 180 grain bullets through my old .30-06, and it seems to produce best velocity and accuracy with those powders. Am particularly fond of H 4350 and Reloader 22 with the 180's.

Regards, Guy

Chris, you, me and probably 99% of the other people have the same manuals. Did you notice that the max 4350 load ios either 56.5 or 57grs. Thats a hint. The technicians used their very expensive pressure equipment to come up with that amount. I don't know why you need that extra 50-100fps, just to say "LOOK WHAT I DID" The ANIMAL YOU ARE HUNTING WILL NEVER KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. As for the extra 1/8" drop. You'll never hold that good, especiallyat longer range. I stand by what I said.

big rifle man, one more time just for you. Pmax for the 30/06 is 58740psi, 58.5grs of IMR-4350 gives 58436psi. I am not after that extra fps if that was all I wanted, I would shoot one of my magnums. Consistancy and accuracy and both of these are present with the aforementioned loads in my 30/06s. I noiticed what max was in the load manuals but also know the loads have in consideration some of the older rifles around that were chambered for the 30/06. Same goes for the 7x57, 257Roberts, 45/70,etc.
Rick.

Sorry Rick, this is beating a dead horse. One of these days you'll realize where I'm coming from, Hopefully not the hard way. From the people I've talked with in the industry it's just a matter of time. Take care

big rifle man, don't know who you talked to "in the industry" but I will give you some more info. Today the figures I gave you came from Quick Loads which I have found to be very accurate for rounds and powders that have been around for a while. SAAMI average peak pressure for the 30/06 is 60,000 psi. I now refer to " A Handloader's Odyssey The 30/06 Springfield Data Manual" by Stanley Watson. 60grs of IMR-4350 behind a 165gr bullet yields 58000psi out of the rifle he was using. Close to what was given by QL but the higher pressure predicted by QL is still less than SAAMI.
Often stated in various manuals, the real test if you are getting near the pressure limit for a load in a certain rifle is to fire the load in the same brass multible times and check the primer pockets. If the pockets are getting loose the load is too hot. I have fired my loads ten times in the same brass, trimmed once and the primer pockets are still tight.
The latest Speer manual lists 59.0grs of IMR-4350 as max. and my loads are below that.
I have worked up to the same load in at least ten other 30/06s without any problems over the last twenty years, been loading for over forty years. I doubt very seriously "its just a matter of time". I have no idea were you are coming from on this. IMR-4350 is not to slow for the 30/06, Nosler lists it as the most accurate powder with their 165 gr bullets. I have used my loads in 95-98 degree weather and in below freezing, no problems. Never a blown primer, no hard extraction, no expanded primer pockets, no problems. In one of my 06s, I have used the load for over 1500 shots, again no problem. Probably am "beating a dead horse" but thought I should give the other posters more info.Rick.

bigrifleman, tell your sources "in the industry" to contact Hodgdon about their IMR data on the net since they list 60grs. as max for a 165gr bullet with IMR-4350. Let them know it is "just a matter of time". I am sure they need to know.Rick.
