With all the talk about the 35 Newton I was wondering if anyone had some info about the 30 Newton?
It would be interesting to compare it to the 300 magnums we have today.
I presume that the 35 was a necked up 30, please correct me if I'm wrong.

You are right, the .35 is a necked up .30.
I have my Great-Grandfathers .30 Newton, I've loaded ammunition for it, but I haven't shot it yet.

The 30 Newton was a more available chambering. It is another skookum round.

Great, dandy, superb.

Yup! Chinook word indicating a very positive connotation: "right on!"; excellent; powerful.

The 30 Newton is a good round, and runs right in with the 300NormaMag and the 300WinMag. With modern powders and modern action steel strength, it's likely underpowered a bit running 180s at about 3k, but I'd only push it if I used modern 375Ruger brass and a modern production action. If you neck down 375 brass, you may have to turn the necks to keep them from being too thick.

I'd actually build a Newton, no questions asked really. It'll run with any of the others. I don't know if I would like it anymore than a WSM, WM or H&H, but it is certainly pretty cool. Knowing I could make cases from the 375 Ruger makes it somewhat appealing.

It's a good thing I already have the Weatherby 300 mag. or my Whelen project would be in danger. It would be simple to rechamber a 30-06 to 30 Newton 8)

I'm not sure it would be as simple as rechambering an -06, you might need a magnum action with its larger bolt face or maybe a standard bolt face can be altered?

Standard bolt face can be machined to larger casehead fairly easily. My concern would be whether or not the -06 has a 22 or 24" barrel. If I were building a Newton, I'd opt for a 24" configuration. Scotty went the other direction and his 35 Newton is built with a shorter barrel. For the 35, which is purposed a little differently, the shorter tube makes more sense to me. I have a 22" barrel on my 350RemMag. But for a 30cal magnum, for me it starts at 24" and I prefer my 26" 'bee.

I'm not sure how the 22 will work out but man, it's handy. If I were to rebarrel, I'd likely get a 24-25" barrel knowing you can always lop it off.

You don't own a barrel-stretcher, Scotty? I have mine in the garage. It's hanging on the same set of skyhooks as my board stretcher. Right next to the chemlight batteries and that old box of leftover grid squares.
