What are the differences between the two? is one more popular than the other, is ammunition any harder to find for one than for the other? (Other than for reloading)

The 300 Short Action Ultra Mag was designed prior to the 300 Win Short Mag.
The 300 WSM has slightly more case capacity and Winchester did a better marketing job, making it a very popular short mag. With good hand loads, there really isn't much difference. If I were going to pick between the two, I would go with the 300 WSM because you can count on getting brass for a long time to come.

I noticed that the Gander Mmountain I was at last night looking only had about 5 boxes of ammo for the 1 300SAUM they had in the rack.

The remington Saum was designed to wok in the model 7. Thus is is like JD338 said limited in capacity. IMO huge screw up by big green. I would never own one since we have the WSM.

..................The 300 WSM is far more popular and their performance are nearly on par with each other.

There are far more rifle choices from nearly every rifle maker available in the 300 WSM. Not so with the Remington round. 300 WSM factory ammo and reloading componentry is extremely plentiful.

After eight years since its intro, it is safe to say that the 300 WSM will be around for many many years to come.

Mine is extremely accurate and a great performer.

As JD Stated using handloads I can't say one has a drastic advantage over the other. I have a hard time getting away from my Remingtons so I'd go the SAUM direction myself. With that said I'd also fallow POP's advice and buy A LOT of brass while it's available. I can not believe how Remington has done their marketing and chamberings
I've had my eyes on a 7 SAUM and then noticed a bag of Rem brass is $55.00 bucks

For the reasons mentioned above, I would also go with the Winchester version in a bolt gun. The one advantage of the SAUM is it will fit in a .308 length semi-auto action.

Is Remington offering a semi auto in 300 SAUM?

The SAUM was also offered in the Sendero, but if you're gonna go that heavy why not get a RUM. By the way, I no longer have the SAUM for that reason.

DPMS offers the 300 saum in a semi-auto, with 12 round mags avaliable.
Could be alot of fun with 150/165gr AB's.
