300 Win Mag and H1000

Looks interesting.

I have only used RL 22 in the 300 WIN Mag, great velocity and exceptional accuracy.

I have only used two powders, one being IMR4831 and the other being RL22. RL22 seems to work really well with the 180 and 200gr bullets. I know there are others that work just as well, but RL22 seems to work with a variety of different cartridges, so I usually have some on the bench. H1000 is supposed to be really good, just haven't tried it out yet. Scotty

Years ago and days of old I was in love with the 300 Win Mag.
First powder I tried was RL22 and it was Ok.
Next powder was H1000.
I ended up well over max with that rifle, closer to 300 Weatherby charges listed in my manuals and the Alliant powder guides.
Always shot well under MOA.Harder I pushed it the better it shot,up to almost 83 grs.

Shooting 180 NPs I killed alot of whitetails with that combo.
I gave that rifle to my brother when he decided he needed a serious long range deer gun.
He's still killing game with it and using my load load dope.

I had a bit of H1000 left when the phone rang the other day.
Good friend wanted to know if I had any he could try in his 25-06.
Short answer,YES!

It's worth a look fellas.

I use 81 grain of H1000 with 180 grain Hornady BTSP. I use this load combination since I acquired my first 300 Win Mag 15 years ago. Excellent powder and not temperature sensitive at all.

Here's a 5 and 3 shot groups with my Model 70 Laredo LRH @ 100 yards. Typical for this rifle.

I've always used RL22 in my M70 .300 WinMag, but that's just because I was given some loads with 180 Partitions that worked pretty well and never got around to trying anything else.

I have had good luck with 76.0/ RL 22 with 180gr AB in the 300 Win mag

but with the 200gr AB and 210gr Berger Hunting VLD I plan on using H1000 around 80.0 grains both bullets have great BC............should make a great long range moose loads

The Trophy Bonded Tip 180gr looks like a great bullet also.........

I am going to give RL22 a try and see how it works with the 200gr PT's. If it doesn't get what I am looking for, I am going to give H1000 a shot. It just sounds too good to not try. I am able to get 2950FPS out of the Sierra 200gr GK with 74gr's of RL22 and the accuracy is pretty awesome. I hope the PT's do as well. That 200gr AccuBond seems like a great bullet also. Scotty

Hello everyone:

I wanted to follow-up with with my current test results with H1000. I was using Nosler brass trimmed to 2.6 with Fed 215, Rem 9 1/2 (M), Winchester Magnum and CCI 250 primers, with 76, 77, 78 and 79 grains of H1000 capped off with a Nosler 150 grain Ballistic Tip.

Unlike my previous test with IMR 4350, IMR 4831 and H4831SC, I had a wide variety of groups sizes. My best was .489 (best ever with this gun) with 78 grains of H1000 using a Fed 215 primer and my worst (worst ever with this gun) was 1.908 with 78 grains of H1000 with a Rem 9 1/2 (M) primer. I had a lot of groups were two holes touched each other and the third was somewhere else

I have had my best results with IMR 4831 and IMR 4350 so far with all things being equal except the powder. My assessment of H1000 with a 150-grain Nosler BT is on par with what others have told me. H1000 may work great with heavier bullets but not as well with lighter bullets.

I am not saying that H1000 is a bad powder, just not my first choice in my Remington 700 with a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. I had a lot of fun doing this test. I learned a lot and now I am going to take a break from my .300 Win Mag for awhile and give my cheek and shoulder a break from the recoil.

Next test will be with a Sierra Game King.

I would recommend that for targets and small groups try the 180 Sierra BT with a healthy charge of 4350. I think my smallest center to center 100 yard group is around .264 maybe slightly smaller. Nothing special about the rifle just shoots really well with the 180 Sierra and stiff charges of 4350. The most effective bullets in the Win Mag are 180 and heavier.

H1000 standard 300 win mag 1000yrd match load i have read, is a 190gr bthp match, fed mag primer, 80gr H1000. Shooting 150gr bullets at such a low pressure you would have got with 79gr would lead to inconsistant loads I would bet. Lyman lists 83.5gr as max under a 190gr sierra hpbt match with 76gr as the starting load.
