300 WSM or 300 RUM

Due to a slowdown at work I'm forced to sell one of my rifles so out of these 2 which should I keep the one I keep will be my only rifle and they both are Remington 700 XCR's.I'm leaning towards the 300 RUM because of the Power Level ammo Remington makes for it using level I for targets and groundhogs and when hunting I use NOSLER brand ammo in 180 Nosler Partitions but I wanna try some 180 grain AccuBond

Sorry to hear that you have to sell a rifle.
I agree with you, keep the 300 RUM.

When you get to a point to spend some money, invest in some reloading equipment. You will be able to shoot any 30 cal bullet you want to and for a lost less than factory ammo. Save all your brass.

I hope your work situation will change. Really, you can't go wrong with either rifle. While the Power Level Ammunition is available from Remington, almost every manufacturer loads for the 300 WSM. Each provides a slightly different plus.

I think the one to keep depends more on your hunting situations. If primarily long range, more open shooting I'd keep 300 RUM (longer and heavier to some degree). If you're more stalking thicker stuff, a few hundred yard shooting, and hunting in mt laurel I'd opt for the handier 300 WSM. Either one can be handloaded full tilt or down to say 30-06 speeds/ bullet weights depending on game and distance, so I'd go with the most practical for your primary style of hunting.

300 RUM, although very good cartridge, IMO to powerful for anything inside 500 yards. More of a LR cartridge.

300 WSM is a better all around caliber that will still kill further then most need to be shooting, and do it in a lighter more cost effective package.

If your not going to be shooting much more then 600 yards, stay with the WSM, if your shooting further then that, the extra MV with the RUM will help downrange.

I believe in having the most potentiel possible and loading down for the situation. You cant load up from a lesser power round why limit yourself?

I would disagree on this. A 300RUM w/200gn bullet is an awesome combo at any distance. The spike elk I shot last year at about 150yds w/my 300RUM & 200ABs had almost no meat damage, and he dropped in his tracks. My Uncle and his friend even commented about the lack of meat damage and asked me what bullet I was using. My first animal taked was a CA hog at 50 yds w/180ABs. Other than a poor first shot, the second shot did it in and again the damage was minimal. Just my opinion.

I just returned from a week long elk hunt and will tell you that every ounce of weight I had to pack was really significant! I limit my shots to 500 yards because of too many factors like wind can create problems. I used a 300 Wby with 180 AB's at 3250 and did kill my elk, but my next rifle will be a Tikka Lite 300 WSM. My butt is really dragging after that walk in type hunt that averaged 7 miles a day! If you can horseback or drive a vehicle close, then go big, but otherwise even the ammo for the Ultra, or Wby, is heavy!

The WSM would have killed the elk just as dead at 150 yards, with a lot less weight, recoil, and expense.

RUMS were designed/marketed as LR calibers and thats where they do there best. Sure they work up close to, but all that power, expense, and kick isn't going to kill them any deader at close ranges then a standard magnum.
