hey yall, i just bought a winchester model 70 in 300 wsm with a 24" barrel and was wondering if ya have any experience with one what this rifle likes to do and not do load wise

Every rifle is different. You can take 2 of the same rifles/caliber that come down the assembly line, and chances are, there going to like different combos. However, there are times when calibers just seem to like certain loads. I dont have any experience with the 300 WSM so cant help you there, but many do and they should be able to help you. If they dont shoot well for you, dont get discouraged to quickly. Remember that every rifle is different and you must find what IT likes, not what YOU like.

As previously mentioned every rifle is different. What works in one may not in another.
I worked up loads in two identical rifles chambered in 300 Wincheser Magnum one year.
One shot best with IMR 7828, while the other preferred a much faster burning powder, in this case, H 4350.

But, back to your question. I worked up loads a couple of years ago for a Winchester Model 70 chambered in 300 WSM. It was the stainless steel version with the camo stock. The barrel was 24 inches long.

The best load I found for that rifle was using a Winchester case, a Fed 215M primer, 68 grains of IMR 4831, and a 180 grain Nosler Partition. This is a maximum load and the powder is quite compressed. I recommend you start several grains below this charge.
In this rifle I got 3050 fps and consistant groups under an inch for three shots.

I also tried RL 19, RL 22, and N 560 powders, but none performed as well as IMR 4831 in this rifle.

Hope this helps, R F

sorry guys what i really was asking was what bullet weight most people like for the 300 wsm,180gr really seems to be most common but i would like to shoot 165-180gr but since ive got great recipes from yall i have on hand IMR 4198,4831,7828, RL 19, Benchmark, BLC2 and 165gr solid base and 150gr AB's i will be hunting elk so i would say the 150 AB's are too small. but luckly i bought some of the 165gr solid bases from nosler store. anybody like the solid base for elk hunting ?

Of the powders you have IMR 4831 and R-19. For Elk hunting I would go with 180gr Partition first the 165gr Partition second. IMHO there is no better choice than the Partition for critters like Elk. Save the cheap stuff for something else!

craiger, I've used 165 grain partitions in my 300WSM with both IMR4831 and RL19. My advice is to follow the Nosler manual and work up a load for your rifle. I've taken a number of Elk with the 165 and have no complaints.

ya i really like the 165gr partitions for elk hunting but if my rifle shoots the 180gr well than i would be considering that for the next hunt this fall but my other 30 cal (30-06) doesnt like 180 gr bullets at all but it shoots 160-168gr bullets real well

IMR 4831 @ 69.5 with 165 Sierra BTHP Gameking and Fed 215GM in FC Brass............excellent load in the 300 WSM

Tried all the powders MagPro, RL 19, IMR 4350...........the IMR 4831 is hard to beat!
