i know the explosive nature of some ballistic tips when pushed over 3000fps, but was wondering if you think the 180gr. .30cal version would be a good load for mule deer up to 300-400yards? i doubt the muzzle velocity will be any faster than 2900-3000fps out of my rifle. i have some loaded up that i'm going to try out this evening.

They will work great for muleys, bears, and elk. I have those bullets loaded to 3100fps in a couple different 300 WM's for some guys and they have all had great results. Complete penetration on everything. I wouldn't worry about them coming apart unless the shot was about 50 yards and you hit the shoulder on an elk. They'll blow clear through deer like nothing though.

The 180 gr BT is an excellent choice for your 300WM. You could also consider the 180 gr AB which is a bonded core version of the BT.
Either one will work well.

In my 300 WSM - Model 70

IMR 4831 @ 69.5
165 Sierra BTHP
Fed 215 GM Primers
FC Nickle Brass

is one accurate load!

I use the 165 BT on large whitetail and would not be worried about mule deer as well. Complete pass thoughs from 35 yards out to 325. The 180 should do the same. However, I have had great accuracy from my 165 which has been far better than I have achieved out of the 180's.

Most accurate bullet I've ever fired is the 165gr lead tip solid base in my bedded and tuned Sako 30-06 & a friend uses them exclusively in his 300 weatherby.I'll be using either 180 gr accubonds or 165gr solid base bullets for my elk hunt this year.

Within the parameters mentioned they will do great!

Hi Alaska, I've also tried 165 Grain Sierra HPBT's with 67 Grains of IMR4831 in my 300WSM aand you are correct about the accuracy. They are great and they also work fine on deer and Elk. That is one hard bullet and holds together with excellent expansion. Sierra recommends that bullet for magnum calibers.
