I am looking into some other bullets to load and test and was wondering how you guys like the 165 grain ballistic tip for the 308 for Deer from 50-300 yards? What is this bullets best fps loading for max.efficiency?Any pictures?

The 165gr B-Tip is what I shoot in my .308 Win for deer and pronghorn, but switch too the AccuBond for the bigger stuff.Cool thing is they fly exactly the same for me so I do not have to change my scope settings or reloading settings.Best of both worlds!!

The 165gr is the best in the .308 Win in my opinion, not too light, not too heavy to slow it down alot.Just right there in the middle.

Hope this helps-Tim

The 165 gr BT is about perfect in the 308 Win for deer hunting. You should be able to get to 2700-2800 fps. The 165 gr AB would also be an excellent choice too.
Take a look at Varget and RL15 powders.

I use Varget,H335,RE15,RE7,Win.748,H4895,IMR 3031,for just about every rifle i have  Gonna try some VihtN140 and VihtN150 and AA2520 one of these days.
And there is not many powders for the 165 grain that will get you into the 2700-2800fps without going over max book loads. Most of my 165-168 grain are about 2550-2600fps

How hot have you worked up with varget? I found great accuracy and velocity of 2775 fps using 46 grains, which is Nosler's max. Their published velocity for this load is 2820fps. I'm using a 26" barrel so you'd think it would be higher but then my twist is slightly faster. I use the same load in my 18.5" model 7 barrel but haven't chronied it yet. Probably in the neighborhood of 2600 would be my guess.

Yeah even the Varget bottle says 46.0 max but that is about 3 grains more then Sierra and other manuals list,Not saying i dont trust Noslers data but i have used Sierra and Lyman loadings for years without having to worry about barrel wear, pressure signs, blown primers, split cases ,ect.ect.
And i also use alot of Lake City brass also and that does play a part as well.

Oh and 41-42 grains of Varget is what i am working on

Have been using 46 grains of Varget and 165's & 168's from my 24" barrel .308 for quite a few years. Literally thousands of rounds. Yes, it's max. No, it's not dangerous.

Hodgdon and Sierra have quite a disparity in their max loads for Varget. I've chosen to go with Hodgdon's data, as it accurately reflects what I get, and it produces excellent accuracy.

Was just testing my .308 loads a few days ago: 165 Nosler Solid Base, 46 gr Varget, Lapua brass, Federal 210 match primers. Am getting 2796 fps average (call it 2800 fps, close enough), single digit SD figures, and under 1.5" groups - at 300 yards...

Have loaded these cases several times, haven't kept track. I'd estimate 5 - 6 times. No problems. Primer pockets are still tight.

BTW - I really like the B-tips, but the 165 Solid Base bullets were on sale when I needed to stock up on more .308 hunting bullets - and they apparently work out real well too... I'm tickled with 1.5" 300 yard groups!

Not all rifle barrel are alike. If you maxed with Varget at 42, well, so be it. I maxed at 44.8 using the 155 grain Scenar and my velocity is at 2900's. That from 25" Pac-Nor Super-match, 3 grove. Chronograph your load and watch for sign of higher pressure. Good-luck, RJ
