.308 Green Machine at the range

Just wanted to check zero, and get a little more practice before the deer & pronghorn hunting begins. Took the .25-06 and the .308 to the range for some mere 100 yard practice. Not all that impressed with the results from my .25-06, but the good old Green Machine and I are still a pretty good match. Prone, sling, 100 yards with my 165 gr Ballistic Tip hunting ammo:

NICE! Way to go Guy! Now that is some shooting. I gotta sling up and try some 300 yard shooting with the 7WSM and 338... That is very impressive! Way to shoot buddy. I'd take it too.

No, but Lewis was a "dark green Marine" as was said back then.

Green had been places and done things. Really interesting things. He didn't miss often. Lewis didn't either for that matter. Back then, I watched and listened carefully. Those guys knew what they were doing.

Thanks Guy.... I served in a couple different places with a Lawrence Green who once when called an Africian American...bluntly told the officer that he was from Ohio....Not Kenya. His nickname was Smoke cause he moved thru brush like smoke....quietly.

Was just wondering if they the same..... lost track of him.

Fotis - it's back in the HS Precision stock the rifle originally came in, quite a few years ago. It's been glass bedded in addition to the aluminum bedding block. It's not as good as the dark green camo McMillan for range use, but is likely a pound lighter, or more, and I prefer to use the HS for hunting, if I'm going to be doing much walking.

I shoot it a little better with the McMillan, but I like the way it handles more while it's in the lighter, more compact HS stock. Made the same switch about this time last year prior to taking it whitetail hunting.

Thanks guys. It's a good rifle. Short action Rem 700, trued. Rem trigger set to 3#, crisp. Stainless 24" Krieger barrel in the Rem varmint contour, chambered for .308 Win, with a 1:12 twist. Badger Ordnance base and rings - zero degree. Older 1" Leupold 4.5-14x. I almost always forget to use it at anything except 4.5x. Doh! Turner Saddlery sling. Simple but accurate and effective.

All I do for my hunting ammo is swap out the 168 gr HPBT Match bullets for 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip hunting bullets. Accuracy remains excellent. It also does well with 165 gr Nosler Partitions. She's a tad heavy to haul around, with that varmint weight barrel, but not too bad.

Hoping to get an opportunity to fill several tags with the good ol' Green Machine in the next two months.

Guy, how does it shoot heavier bullets with the 1:12" twist?

The chamber was done with a '95 Palma reamer, run in just deep enough to take the 168 gr HPBT Federal Gold Medal match ammo. That was as heavy as I'd planned to go with this rifle, and selected the 1:12 twist for the same reason.

That said, it shoots 175 gr match bullets and 180 gr hunting bullets well. Even handles the 190 gr Sierra Matchkings well - turns out they're great for 600 yard competition. I seldom use them though.
