I picked up a weatherby 7mm STW. I always wanted one of these so it was time to just buy it. I got my dies and brass and only 1 box of bullets 160 grain accubonds. Any thoughts on loads or powders it doesn't have to be 160 grain pills.

thanks LT

Well I'm fairly new to the STW, but I'm getting 3240, and sub .5" 100 yard five shot groups with Retumbo. I had a different one about 12 years ago, and it shot the 150 Swift scirroco really well with 7828. From what I have gathered, H1000, 7828, RL-25, and Retumbo will be the top preformers with the 160 AB. I don't know what the new RL-33 is going to do for the STW, I'm going to play with it as soon as I can get my hands on some. I also had great luck with H4350 and the 140 BT during break in.

I really think that the 160 AB is about as good as it gets at this point for the STW. I dug a few out of the dirt @ 800 yards and they were in the 120gr weight retention range. The one from 1000 yards barely opened up, but opened up anough to shed 20 grs of weight. As skills permit, I think a guy would be ok for elk a long ways out with it. The BC, hurts it a bit when compared to the VLD/Amax at the longer ranges, but I'll take realable performance over an extra 300 fps anyday. I have no plans on shooting anything but the 160 AB out of mine.

H1000, Retumbo, US869, and wc 872 or WC 868. with WC872 95 gr gets me 3340 fps with a 160 AB, make sure its in cool weather.

I shoot both the 160 Ab's and the 175 gr Partition. Nosler cases seem to be the most accurate in my rifle. The most accurate bullet is the 160 TSX but having shot two elk with them I was not happy with their performance and switched to the Noslers. My rifle is very picky so have patience just in case. Good luck !

I forgot, I use RL-19 and H-1000.

IMR7828 and H1000 really good powders and also consider Retumbo. My Savage 116 in STW really like the 169gr AccuBond and IMR7828sc

If you said "at game", I would totally agree, unless/until Nosler brings us a 170-180 grain pill to play with (and the rifle has enough twist to utilize it). But I could see whacking steel or coyotes with a VLD or A-Max. At a long, long way downrange.

The standard 9 twist will stabilze anything up to 200 gr at STW velocities.

I'll take your word for it. I've never paid that much attention to twist rate for anything other than .22s, 6mms, and 6.5s.

Congratulations on the 7mm STW.
IMHO, this round begs for the 160 gr AB and slow burn rate powders as already mentioned.
Take a look at Retumbo, I have had excellent results in the 7mm RUM with this powder and the 160 gr AB.

Thanks for the repliess guys, I have all the powders listed so I have a good starting place for the 160 accubonds. Next trip to the store I am buying some 140's and 150's. Now the fun begins on choosing what powder to start with!

thanks
