I'm going to load some 160 accubonds for a friend of mine and was thinking RL-22 as a starting powder or is there a better choice as a go to powder for the 7mm?

That is what I am using in my 7mm Rem Mag. I am sure there are others just as good, but RL22 has been pretty excellent for me. Scotty

7mm RM?
Tough to beat RL 22 with a 160 gr AB. Other powders would be RL 25, IMR 4831 and Mag Pro (your favorite)

Never tried Mag Pro. I'll bet your thinking Ram Shot magnum, and yes it is a favorite of mine.

That it, my bad.

With RL 22, work up to 63.0 grs with the 160 gr AB in your 7mm RM.

IMR powders can be temperature sensative. From my research, I would suggest H1000, H4831SC, Retumbo and IMR 7828SSC despite the IMR temperature "Issue". Those were what I was working on before my 7 mag was stolen anyways.......gonna have to replace it soon!

I use imr 4831. I have 3 guns that I load for that all shoot touching groups at 100 yds. Never had an issue with temp, but I only hunt between about 105 and 0 degrees F.

I guess that if I took a 7mm to alaska in the winter, or maybe up north, I would worry more about the temp problem. I have not seen it in Co, Ca, or Texas...

I'm using im7828 64 gr of powder with combined technology 150 .and all shoots are touching in the same hole.the rifle is a REM sps and I have piller bedded it.

I think just about any powder between IMR-4350 and H-1000 will work.Just pick one,do a little research and work up.I've personally only used IMR-4350,Winchester WXR ,Reloader-22 and H-870.Was able to get accurate loads with all of them.

TXbaldhunter,

Surprising that you list those last three powders. They are the powders that I use for my personal loads. WXR works very well with 160 grain TSX in my 7mm RM. H870 propels a 175 grain PT and proves wonderfully accurate at 200 yards. RL22 works exceptionally well on a number of bullets in a variety of weights. While I've used quite a spectrum of powders over the years with a large spectrum of bullets, I am pretty well focused for my hunting loads to the extent that I still have a good supply of WXR and H870 (in particular) on hand for loading this rifle.

Ten years ago I was using a great H870 load with the 175 Partition in my 7mm Rem mag - then the supply of H870 dried up. That's when I got more interested in trying other powders and settled on RL-22 mostly, with some very good results also from H4831.

Thanks for all the replies. I had some RL-22 on hand and so I worked up 2 loads that shot a 3 shot group right at 1 inch @ 100 yards. Did some tweeking of powder charge and col and got the 1 load to get down to a 3 shot group that a nickel will cover, good enough. Thanks for everyones time to reply to my question.
