Anyone have a clue where to start?

My Hornady manual doesn't have the 125 grain GMX in it, trying to find a starting point for the .300 Savage. Would like to find something at least a MV of 2800 fps, but would prefer to end up close to 3000 fps .

Thanks!

Hodgdon has .300 Savage data for the 130 gr bullet. Perhaps that would suffice for a starting point? It's online at Hodgdon's web site.

Do a quick load work up to find your max load. Use the info above and test your rifle using a chrono and know the signs of pressure

My wife thinks I only have 3 guns

Well I don't have quick load, I was just hoping someone had a page out of a newer Hornady manual they could scan.

I'd use Hodgdons data and start at the min with a 130. 300 Savage data is fairly mild, shouldn't be a big trick getting where you want to be.

I meant load up some loads to test your rifles max charges. It will make you spend an extra day at the range, but you will know your rifle's max load using that bullet

My wife thinks I only have 3 guns

I've got the latest Hornady manual and they do not have data in there for the 300 Savage and the 125 GMX. If it were me I would start with your favorite 150 data and maybe a add a grain later on. .... you might want to also cross-reference some Barnes data on their 130 and 150 bullets but I would expect without the relief grooves the GMx will be a little stickier. Barnes data is pretty easy to find online I can give you a link if you need it.

Ackley list for the 125/130 bullet a starting load of 40 grains of 4895 and max load of 46 grains MZ of 2780 on max load

My Speer manual #9 has numerous loads listed for the 130 weight bullet. What powders do you have on hand?

That's what I needed to know, thanks. I have Barnes data on the 130 grain and Nosler's on the 125 AB/BT. I can work up loads from that. I was just hoping Hornady might have some data on it.

What makes me a little bit nervous about your project is that Hornady claims the GMX does not make appreciably more pressure than their other bullets. Yet when the powder Company's test them like ramshot and Hodgdon the data they come up with is always quite a bit lighter....like up to 3 grains in a 3006 based case. I always enjoy going to raamshots website and looking over their data..... they sure test a pile of different bullet Brands, and it's a little eye opening sometimes.

does the 125 GMX have 2 relief grooves like most GMX? Let us know how it shoots I've been thinking about tinkering with them in my 308....!

Thanks Pop!

I haven't looked at the GMX lately but for some reason I'm thinking there is only one groove. Right now I'm messing with the 130 Barnes TTSX. However, I'm going to try the GMX and AB after deer season in OK is over. I'm around 1.25" with the Barnes at around 2790 fps. My daughter's go to load has been the 125 BT at a hair over 3000 fps from her M700 Classic, but I haven't found any handloads that come close to matching those Double Tap rounds she shoots.

using 130 load data is fine... per sierra the most conservative reloaders in the world. Work up from start and watch pressure signs.

Well... actually it probably isn't a good idea to use 130 data for the 125 GMX. The latest Hornady manual does not list a 125 for the 300 Savage but it does for the 308 Winchester and it's the 125 sst. When you move up to the 130 Hornady bullets they actually allow you to use MORE powder than they did for the 125 SST. I would expect a 125 monolithic to be stickier than a 125 sst.
Maybe you could email or call Hornady and get some information from the source.

You mentioned wanting to get the 125 Ballistic Tip going 3000 fps out of a 300 savage. It all depends on what your barrel length is but you can get close with max loads of IMR 4895. I really don't think you can get enough into a case to be over pressure. I am shooting this bullet in my 21 1/2" barrel 308 Win with 46 grs and it does 3000 fps over my chrno. I am shooting 42 grs in my 24" barrel 30x47 which is the 300 Savage case with the shoulder pushed back 10 thousands inch but left the same over all length. I am getting 2850 fps in it. I can not get any more powder in the case and get no pressure signs. Both loads drop deer in their tracks out to 300ish yards. I also use this bullet in my 30-30AI 14" barrel Contender pistol at 2670 fps and it SMOKES deer out to 200 yards so far.

I'll also put a plug in for the 125 AccuBond.... I sectioned one of these years ago and it's an awesomely tough-looking little bullet.... the jacket gets thick really quick on this bugger and the lead only goes about 2/3 down the body.....leaving so much base that the base is a lethal projectile all by itself if there was a separation..
308 speeds on this bullet should be a Cakewalk and I don't think 3006 speed would be bothering at all.

Here s what Hornady sent me:

We do have load data for H4895 and that will start at 38.0 grains @ 2500 fps to a max. load of 44.1 grains @ 2900 fps.

Thanks,

I also picked up a pound of I3031 and AR Comp to try yesterday.
