What kind of terminal performance differences would there be between your 240 gr. 44 magnum JSP and JHP bullets at rifle velocities if any? I am kinda torn between the standard and Partition bullets in my Ruger 77/44 for deer hunting. I took two deer with Remington bulk pack 240 gr jhp's over a health dose of H110 last year. Terminal performance was fine, but I am looking to improve on accuracy.

I have a Remington 700 VLS in 6MM. While it is too heavy for woods hunting, it would make a fine rifle for "box" hunting. I would like to get a deer, target and varmint load that all shoot close to the same point of impact. I could probably do this with the 85 gr Partition and 80 gr ballistic tips. I have taken deer with the 100 gr 6mm Partition with great results. 85 gr is getting pretty light. Is that 85 gr pill up to the task of taking 200 pound deer at 300 yards (arbitrary maxes for me)? I'm curious about the corporate thinking that went into the development of a 6MM 85 gr Partition vs a 100 gr Partition.

Thanks for your time,

I will get back to you on these questions. Give me till tomorrow. I can tell you that the 85gr is light. I would personally stick with the 100gr, the corporate thinking had a lot to do with guys pushing bullets out of lets say a Weatherby. A bullet needs to be able to handle that velocity. Partition does that. I am a fan of bullet weight and energy.

An 85gr Partition will be at 2473fps at 300yrds (If muzzle is 3400 fps)
The energy released will be 1087 ft/lbs

A 100gr Partition will be at 2472fps at 300yrds (if muzzle is 3200fps)
The energy release will be 1279ft/lbs

With the higher B.C. and same velocity at 300yrds, I would rather have the bigger bullet. That is assuming your gun shoots them well, which it sounds like it does.

The 240 JHP will expand faster and to a larger diameter than the JSP, will reduce penetration. Bullet selection should be based on penetration requirements.
